Oh, oh, always a debate point.
I have expressed my views here before.
WD-40 - For me a big NO NO. Gummed up so many of my early engines until I wised up.
Flush with Remoil, blow out with compressed air, flip, flip, flip. Blow out some more. Add a drop or two of Prather or Great Planes after run oil in the exhaust port and intake, flip some more CW CCW. Wipe dry. Store. You will never have a problem.

Re: After Run Oil
The ony argument area of disagreament over anything on this forum greater than "After Run Oil" is "SPI" and what it does/can do.
I clean the venturi holes, Venturi, and NVA on my TD engines with Metholated Spirits, as it is so easy for one of the sprinkler holes to block, after each days flying. When I am flying through the season, I rarely use and form of after run oil as I use a fair bit of castor in my fuel (again for greatly disputed reasons. Lol. ) If my engine will be sitting around longer than about 3 weeks without running, then I flush the engine with Metholated spirits, and put a few drops of singer sewing machine oil down the venturi and work it through by flipping the engine. I dont always do that either, and have found my engines are fine. but with my TDs I always clean the Venturi, squirt through the sprinkler, NVA, clean the needle, and take the needle tubing that seals it off and clean that, as sometime stuff hides in there. Lol.

Agreed -- same for me.
For after run oil (if not flying for up to a month), I'll add a drop or two of Air Tool Oil -- it has some anti-rust properties.
For long term storage, a 50/50 mix of ATF and Marvel Mystery Oil. Give the engine a good dose, flip through to spread around and expel any excess, then into a plastic ziplock, squeeze out as much air as possible and zip up.
Re: After Run Oil
yep, Andrews approach is a pretty sound one to follow! the WD-40 for after run purpose is evil. Lol. I like the air tool oil idea, as it gets in everywhere, (bit like auto trans fluid) and the idea of putting the engine in a zip lock bag with the air expelled is a good one. Maybe some of these ideas are a bit overkill as we dont do this stuff with bigger engines to the same extent, but then again, we can do it easily to the Cox engines, and it can only be beneficial, not do harm. Mind you, the zip lock bag means I would need to clean the outside of the engine properly. Lol. As it seems methanol, nitro, castor, seems to destroy zip lock bags. but good protocol especially as the Cox engines and their parts become harder and harder to source, five minutes of preventative maintenance becomes very worthwhile.

Air tool oil because, it's what i have on hand all the time and it works with out failure. I should put some of my engines in plastic bags, period .

I have been using Bernie's oil for as long as I remember, with good results.
Because I use party balloon tanks almost exclusively, I evacuate the tank and fuel line up to and including the venturi by pulling on my fueling syringe with the fueling line attached.. The vacuum will clear the entire fuel tank and path including the very small venturi holes even in a TeeDee010. So castor will not stay anywhere it should not.
Then I remove the glow head and apply 2-3 drops of after run oil on the piston top on TDC, making sure the oil flows around the full piston circumference, and crank the prop a couple times so an oil film will form on the full cylinder and piston surface..screw the glow head back and wish the engine good night..

Re: After Run Oil
Air tool oil ranks high on my hit parade too, and I have both, Marvel and Campbell Hausfeld. But Remoil works best. However it has gotten crazy expensive so I have snuck air tool oil into my Remoil dispenser bottle.
I think Marvel's air tool oil is mostly Marvel Mystery oil, looks the same and smells the same. Marvel and I go back many years, when I used my last can (not plastic) I cleaned it up and saved it right here next to my computer.
One thing (for me the only thing) that WD-40 is good for is cleaning the crud off the top of 100,000 + mile pistons. Works great in that application.

wd40 is better then nothing
I agree that wd40 gummes up over time but that time can be years depending on environment.
Advantage is its relative easy to buy and relative cheap.
It does protect engines from corrosion.
So if wd40 is all you have then go ahead and use it just be aware of its limitations.
Once you got a better oil then flush the engine with isopropyl alcohol and relubricate.

I tell my friends I'm simply being frugal -- they tell my not to confuse frugal with being a cheap SOB.

I am perhaps some of both. There is a limit to expenditures. I have learned that it is more important to have fun and enjoy yourself, than follow the crowd and spend beyond your means (especially if it means to accumulate debt) just to please them.
There is more fun for me flying a single channel R/C aircraft even without motor control, than I would with a 4+ channel .40 pattern plane. About the only thing more fun is a .35+ control line aircraft on 60+ feet of line. There, going big is better.
Regarding tool oil, I believe that this is simply mineral oil, which is about as simple and unadulterated as one can get. I have used it to supplement my hydraulic jacks and other lubricating uses.

Funny, searched for “after run” too and no return. Didn’t get the thread link given above which has “after run” on its title.

Re: After Run Oil
I was using Corrosion X as an ARO as it’s said to be one of the best rust inhibitors, lubricants and penetrants oils. I just started using Marvel Air Tool oil. I like it.
Any comments about Corrosion X?

I use Marvel air tool oil also and I've been using it for about 6 years now. I like the fact it doesn't inhibit starting. Use caution if you put it in a diesel because it will fire off when flipped.
