Re: Sure Start
Reason I ask is after the customary 3 tanks, it was spinning at a 16.7K
this with a throttle ring BUT after the 4th tank the glow was dead.
Back luck, old parts or am I doing summat wrong?

John,
The RPM figures seem on par. The glow doesn't seem right although I am sure they do go bad quick once and a while. Doubt you are doing anything wrong.

Re: Sure Start
Dead as in melted filament, or dead as in loss of catalytic activity?
I've never melted any of the regular cox plugs while running an engine, but the filaments can certainly go bad and loose their activity, especially after long time storage.
If you use the latest inserts they might melt if you don't use enough gaskets underneath.

I thought cos it's a medallion cylinder Ron maybe (especially as it's got a throttle ring which I think must restrict the top end)
I should have put xtra gaskets it.

Just Dead as in no glow Kris and no circuit across the head.
But as I say it's all new (old) not run gear.

I notice on mine they tend to run a little warmer when the ring is on. Maybe the glow didn't like the heat.

What do you use to lit the glow plug?
The few times I've actually burnt a filament it was a handling error...

Talking of handling errors.............
I did a VERY stupid thing last week, setting up the panel for a run I plugged the glowlead into the starter sockets, and never noticed until I connected the plug! Mind you, that plug glowed REALLY bright for a fraction of a second!

Re: Sure Start
Nothing like a shot of 12V to light a glo plug but for milli-second.
I've done it too mind you.

Ditto. It usually takes me several failed attempts to start the engine before I catch on.

Re: Sure Start
oh oh I must've been close to my sure start's bottom ends ability just now.....
I stuck 3 tanks through the new TD topend and wound her up.
Peaked at 19830 with 2 gaskets and no throttle ring.
Gonna slow/richen it for a couple more tanks and if it'll hold 18.5 on a regular basis I'll be happy.
My ears are actually ringiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing.

Re: Sure Start
John: And speaking of sure-starts perhaps this what this Ryan ST pilot needs. (Yes it does eventually start and is shown in flight)
Ryan ST-A - YouTube
BTW, my first airplane ride in one of these in 1947. I have a picture of a VERY excited ten year-old sitting in the front seat wearing a leather flying helment.
The plane was owned and flown by one of my Dad's clients as a birthday present. We took off and landed at local airport that is now a shopping center.
Time marches ever onward but the memories go with it.

Watched a gentleman restore one of these at the Toldeo Wa airport. Ex air force colonel and test pilot who did several tours in Vietnam flying phantoms against the enemy. Awesome stories!!. Very neat old aircraft and he did a concourse job on it. A soup can/funnel system to talk back between pilot and passenger during flight.

John:
Likely the most sensation birthday present I received as kid. All during WWII I followed aviation but, due to the war, fuel for general aviation was all but non-exsistent. Once the war was over and fuel was again available out came some those wondeful aircraft and my aviation fantasys soared.
It was a great time to be young and impressionable.
