"Perfect" clunk tank
I got tired of their not being any sub 1oz clunk tanks on the market so like others I decided to make my own.
I used a 3/4 oz perfect tank to do the mod with. Pretty straight forward take a look!
Before the mod.........

[img][/img
and after..........

[img][/img]
I have noted two problems with this mod, 1 you can"t clean it out easily so you should probably run a filter and 2 you can't replace the hose easily. There you have it! real easy to do and it looks good. I like perfect tanks cause they look like real fuel tanks

What position are you going to mount it in?

Thanks John,
I am sure I am not the first to do this. I wanted to have a clunk tank for a future .020 RC model. Guys like yourself having been around the hobby for a while are always coming up with something new. The perfect tanks are a bit heavier as they are more of a CL/FF tank but, they look good and there is a really wide selection of sizes available.

Rusty,
I am planning to mount it vertical as shown, it really could be mounted in any position as the clunk hits all sides. Do you forsee a problem?

Re: "Perfect" clunk tank
No, it should be fine as long as the clunk moves freely. It will suck air in a nose down attitude, but they all do that.cribbs74 wrote:RknRusty wrote:What position are you going to mount it in?

Only when it's stopped Rusty, don't forget as long as there's forward motion the fuel will sit at the rear of the tank.

Yeah I can see that, I guess pressure feed would alleviate that. I have a question for you! Seeing as you are a hard core CL guy how in the world did the combat flyers/stunters of yester year ever keep the engines running with these "perfect" and "veco" tanks? I have been watching some CL combat vids on youtube and those planes are all over the place. Sometimes I wonder how they even do it as the planes move so fast that I can barely see them and they dart in all directions. The guys flying them are not young men either!

Re: "Perfect" clunk tank
this tank looks more like it's intended for c/l flying, it has that wedge shape to it.
but it looks really good. btw, how thick is that sheet metal its made out of?
it always looks very flimsy to me when i see one of those...

It was intended for CL but, I modded it for RC. I have not measured the thickness of the metal. I can say it is not flimsy, actually it is pretty robust! If you really screwed the model into the ground I am sure it would ding but, probably wouldn't rupture.

Not sure if it's sheet metal either as it takes solder quite well regular sheet metal and led/tin solder do not play together well. Maybe it is tinned brass or copper.

Hey! Lay off my tires!
They are a cheap brand for sure. They are old and dry rotted but, still get me down the road. I have put 17,000 miles on them and they still have tread. The ones on the rear are even older and who knows how many miles same brand well over 17k on those.

Re: "Perfect" clunk tank
The only way the fuel stays in the rear when it's nose down is if the plane is accelerating at more than 1g. That's good for loops, but not a slow final approach in an R/C plane.John Goddard wrote:Only when it's stopped Rusty, don't forget as long as there's forward motion the fuel will sit at the rear of the tank.

Re: "Perfect" clunk tank
ok, back to topic...
how are you gonna fasten the thing? i don't see any mounting lugs.
i'd probably go the unprofessional way and zip-tie its *ss on there.

Wedged inside foam padding.......? Not sure. If I were to use a sullivan clunk tank it would be the same, actually come to think of it what tanks have mounting lugs? I would think direct bolt to the frame would not be desireable due to vibrations (foaming) unless you had rubber mounting pads or something.

Re: "Perfect" clunk tank
sounds, good, you could also use some of that metal band with holes in it like this:
i bet that would make it really sturdy.

Re: "Perfect" clunk tank
The only thing I could see is if the inner clunk tube was to fold forward and somehow get kinked/stuck, as if you were to flip inverted on a almost empty tank. You would have to deadstick in and then shake the tank to get the clunk back down where it is supposed to be.
But for simple daydream flying, it looks to be a very good setup, Congrats!

Thanks PV,
I never thought of that! Although the clunk sits at the back of tank and the tank is about an inch wide sitting vertically so if the clunk was to fold on itself it wouldn't have much room to do so. Unless, a really hard jarring was involved and if that happened I would be having bigger problems!
