maybe fly today

maybe fly today
At my shack in Fisherman Bay in south Australia, the sun has just come up, Ive pulled my boat out of the shed. Its dead calm. Im going fishing this morning be back around 11 this morning, my lad will clean the boat whilst I have a little nana nap, then I will be up and we are going to fly our cut down man-win trainers mounted with our surestart engines sporting Tee Dee cylinders, Kamtechnic heads and turbo plugs, and killer bee cranks. Weird thing is they fly better with a six by 3 or 4 prop than a five by x prop. I dont worry about the science, what works works. We are out in the bush/farmland here so no one will hassle us about noise etc.
Once we have flown, and I dont care how much the wind comes up this arvo, Ive prepped all the engines last night and mounted them and all my kit is checked and ready to go. We will be flying. Maybe not long or far but we will fly
Then its back to the shack, my lad will clean the fish (cos we will bag out of course ), I will clean and maintain the engines and planes whilst having a beer, before we kick back for our fresh caught fish, some more beers, and I fiddle with engine parts and probably start fixing the broken planes.
Yep, sounds like one of my better plans. Definitely worth getting up this morning.
For anyone that got this far. Lol. Take it easy and have a good one! :-)
Cheers,
Gary

Re: maybe fly today
Great story Gary and reminds me of my younger days, but I didn't have anyone to clean my fish. Pickerel, Bass, Perch. Maybe at night a Horned Pout (Catfish) or two.
We need pictures. Planes would be nice too.

I miss those days. Son, daughter, and me putting the boat in, fishing most of the morning, then later playing with a airplane or two if afternoon air was calm enough...

Re: maybe fly today
Goodaye All,
Glad my story brought good memories for you all, I dont take many pictures as I have this thing that living the moment can be broken/distracted by worrying about pictures. But that said, I will try and get some today, as its part two before the long weekend is over. We have a public holiday here in south Oz for a horse race. Lol. Hey Bob and Fred, try not to let them just be memories of when you were young, sometimes you can still do similar and its even more fun and still have the memories. I got started back on this path about 18 months ago when I found out I have an incurable Lymphoma but I am for now asymptomatic. So I figured right now needs to be the best time of my life as Im still alive and feel well. I went to a hobby shop looking at engines and saw a friend I used to race bikes against 30 plus years ago. He was getting back into it as well, as he was recovering from a severe stroke. Funny how stuff happens. We fly heaps together now, and make up all kinds of stuff for flying together and try to use what we learnt from our racing days on these awesome little cox motors. Its been great for both of us.
We caught fish yesterday, flounder, king george whiting and got smashed up by a school of snapper which we cant keep as the govt put a 3 year ban on them, so we had to put them back. Before the ban, people came from all over Australia to fish for snapper here where my shack is. Also got smashed up by some bronze whaler sharks! Last time we fished at this particular ground we met an 18 foot white pointer who was rather angry and wanted to eat our propellor:affraid: and our boat is only 15 foot. It gave me quite a surprise to say the least.
The flying was great!!! my cut down man-win flew great on 42 foot 008 metal lines, but we broke one, luckily on the ground. Think my Lad might have trodden on it. Lol. He is Intellectually disabled and 27 years old, so I look at it that all the years at the start in hospitals and therapy and stuff, now I have a fantastic son and friend who does all kinds of stuff with me. I am very very lucky to have him!!!!! He launches my plane and all sorts of stuff, soon I will finish his man-win so he can have a fly too. He will be fine at it Im sure. He can surf, play ozzy rules and represented Australia in the Special Olympics in Soccer as the captain against Pakistan, spain, and Malaysia. His short term memory is less than 1 percentile so its very hard for him to learn as he cant remember what just happened. But learn he does, and keeps doing it.
The cut down man-win was fantastic to fly and I had set the bellcrank etc. very very conservatively. I will set them for much more movement today and hopefully get in some loops and wingovers and maybe just maybe try hooking a wingover to go inverted, which will probably be closely followed by a crash. HaHaHa. My cut dow Man-win(s)fly great. My son just lets go of them and they fly straight out of his hands and pull really well on 42 foot lines. But, when the engine stops they make like a stuka dive bomber and dont pull out. Hmm, I think there might be some issues with my re-design, hey but Im not a scientist :-) Maybe the elevator needs to go back a bit further, I never checked the CG, it flies. I will fiddle with them. One of them, made exactly the same, as I made all the parts at the same time, always wants to fly down at the ground and not go up HaHaHa, but they look identical, maybe the wire to the control horn which is really sloppy on that one needs doing properly. Lol. It will work out eventually. My engines ate my turbo plugs pretty quick, have to think about more gaskets or better quality turbo plugs, but my engines revved great and never changed revs due to the pressure. again I will work it out.
Im about to turn sixty and my timeline probably isnt great, could be ten years could be six months, I am very healthy and feel very well at the moment but one day thats going to change and some drugs will extend things but I wont feel well. So I genuinely rejoice in feeling well still and doing great things with my son. I said to him last night whilst eating dinner that it was the best fun Ive had since I had to give up racing yamaha TZ Grand Prix bikes. Fishing, flying planes with the smell of the fuel and screaming engines, few beers later in the day. (he doesnt drink by choice - never has, reckons his brain as it is doesnt need alcohol as well. Lol. )
Sun wont be up for some time yet. Its been raining, but still should get a fish in and go flying again. And yes, pictures. I will try and get Rhys to video my man-win. I fly them as they are easy to build, strong and I have always loved wings. Used to fly Dominators and Warlords when I was young. Just like them. :-) and I will take a photo of my homemade new flying handle I made that is fully adjustable, light, easy to make and cost me about 5 dollars and worked great.
I talk too much. HaHaHa
Take it easy.
Cheers,
Gary

I can’t think of a much better day than that. Well maybe if things finished off with a bedroom dalliance...
Pretty envious here!

Re: maybe fly today
Great job and story as well. Those Man-Win trainers sure do not look like much, but they can really take a beating! Also to note, they can be pretty much redesigned as well and fly just as well. One of teh designers of it here even did a Canadian Maple Leaf version of it and flew just as well. I actually had one of the very first ones of that plane in my hand last year, but gave it to a friend just starting out.

Re: maybe fly today
Hi,
I glued the hinges on with cheap everyday superglue, I found epoxy wouldnt hold the hinges on the plastic for some reason.
I dont use tape for hinges on any planes I build, I find the hinges are cheap enough that tape hinges are not worth the hassle.
Hope you friend and Son enjoy flying them, thats the great thing about them, they are just pure fun flying for people who want to have a go and crashing them doesnt matter
Cheers,
Gary

Re: maybe fly today
Following the plans for the ManWin Trainer, it calls for simply to remove one side of the 'flute' that is to become your hinge. While I have built a couple to specs, I did find the hinges slightly stiff, but they work. However, as of late when I build them, I do as per the plan again, with the exception of I do also remove sections off the top as well in a similar manner leaving a few pieces to act as the hinge. Works well.

Epoxy and CA glue stick to coroplast. First you have to remove this layer of chemicals from the sheet. I use thinner but you can also use a flame that you pass very quickly over the coroplast. Coroplast is a good material to build planes and I mean not only a simple sheet with an engine. This is one of my free flight models:

thanks heaps for the Tip overlord!! What do you use as a thinner please to clean the corro off?
I really like corro as a building material and the plane you have built and flown as shown in your photos is an awesome example of what can be done with corro and a large dollop of skill. Gives me something to aim at! thats for sure. Lol. building skill is not my best attribute probably due to no patience and want for instant gratification Lol.
Excellent Build

Re: maybe fly today
I use ordinary paint thinner but synthetic thinner might work as well. i like coroplast because it's couloured in the mass, fuelproof, sturdy and also easy repairable.

Re: maybe fly today
Or alternatively, you can pass a flame over it, whether a disposable lighter, BBQ lighter, or torch from a little distance away. Either way will work withgood results. I myself personally use a lighter or torch. If you have not ever tried a lighter or torch, I would make a couple test pieces just to get the hang of it and see how it looks and works.
