They hold a wing ribs or tail surface perpendicular to the building board when building so they will glue up at 90 degrees. Like below. Hope this helps answer your question.

Some ribs and tail surfaces are different thicknesses hence the divergent grooves for different sizes.

Someone decided to paint an engine at one time I suspect. Head is spraypainted red and is a decent head I had here. Keeping the blown plug to drill and tap for a regular plug in the future. Good eye! Even I didn't notice it in the picture.
