Santa is coming soon
I you don't have one already may I suggest that you place a Dremel rotary tool on your want list?
They come in a variety of prices and accessory features.
Personally I have Dremel Model 300 (5 speed electric). The accessories that are available are truely something to be seen.

Dremel is universially recognized as a fine tool with many usues. During the Christmas buying season there are some particularlly good values to be had.

The cordless Dremels are junk. I burnt mine up and now it only runs at full speed. I assume the MOSFET that controls the motor speed is shorted. Never took the time to fix it. 2 more where I work are also burnt the same way so there must be a design flaw with them.
The 5 speed 110V electric seems to be bullet proof.

Yes, I like the fact that the cordless electric Dremel doesn't have proprietorial battery.
It's true that there are cheaper rotary tools than Dremels but I find that "cheapness" is usually it's own reward.

Jason:
The principle reason that MOSFET's burn up is the tool operator depends too much on tool pressure rather than tool speed to do the task. Overloaded, naturally the MOSFET will burn up.
Than my experience anyway.

You picked up on the wrong quote from me ergo my remark: "....very large tree and aven larger $$$$$$ budget."
If you expect "Miss America" (the P-51) your family must not be concerned with "the fiscal cliff" like the rest of us schmucks.

Re: Santa is coming soon
I bought a mini rotary tool from Harbor Freight a few years ago for $6. It hasn't failed in anything I have tried to do yet. It will run on 9 to 18 volts.
Great for spinning cox parts to sand/polish. I think I got more than what I paid for here.

That's fine if you like batteries (I don't)
I seriously doubt that the HF rotary tool has the accessory options as a Dremel.

Re: Santa is coming soon
Sitting here looking at three dremel brand rotery tools, one over thirty years old-- plug in, one about fifteen-- plug in, and a three year old 12Vmax LiOn 8200 is my day to day got to tool. Sure do wish I still had my dremel tabel saw/ sander. Last year SWMBO got me a bunch of stuff from MicroMark like a 9" band saw and very small form factor 1" belt & 5" disk sander.

If you are not on their mail list you are missing a very good source of hobby craft tools and supplies
When I was at dad's knee helping build in the early 60s it was coping saw, very small Yankee driver, small brass wood planes, Small chisel set, small file set, sanding block (with full sized sandpaper assortment) and Exacto knives

There is NO doubt that having the right tool (and knowing how to use it) is one of the greatest joys in modeling.

It has 60 little bits and attachments. Everything from a wire brush to a cloth buffing wheel. It uses a DC wall wart.
Anything with a battery from HF is usually junk. I'm not a fan of battery operated power tools.
Re: Santa is coming soon
I suffer from the opposite problem. I do most of my work without the right tools, so my projects take a long time. But I do have a Dremel and a mini-butane torch... and a big hammer! And a screwdriver somewhere around here. Oh yeah and my ancient but trusty Schrade pocket knife. One of these days I need a small electric hand drill and something electric that will cut modeling wood.SuperDave wrote:There is NO doubt that having the right tool (and knowing how to use it) is one of the greatest joys in modeling.
I'm gonna go see Santa at the mall about that.

"and a big hammer!" - Rusty
Oh yes! Out here those as known as BFH's. Insert your own "F" word. i.e. Big Ford Hammer.
Personally I've always pined for a small turret lathe but have no room space to use it.
