Tach Race 2021?
Hey guys by my math it’s been 3 coming up on 4yrs since we have done a tach race. I really don’t have the time these days to CD an event, but I think we should consider one for 2021.
What’s the consensus?

Re: Tach Race 2021?
I'd be keen to see it go ahead, but the way the global postal system is going, I doubt I would participate. There could be some precious property left floating around the globe for who-knows-how long.
Maybe consider a Tach Race by proxy. Set the prop and fuel% and let people run them at home, video and submit. Just need a tach and the same brand/size prop. You won't even need a Tach. Someone could audio-tach your video. I would hope people will be honest and do it right. I know weather and altitude will be variables, but if we don't offer any huge incentives (prizes) what is there to lose?

Re: Tach Race 2021?
I think video submittal should work. Videos can be audio-tached with e.g. the RPM Gauge Android application so anyone can validate the individual rpm results on an Android based smartphone. The only parameter is the nitro content that would be set on a sportsman-like manner ( aka trust basis) by us all to the guaranteed identical value.
I would be in..
My garage where I bench-run my engines is unheated and winter low temperatures do not help reaching summertime peaks. I would suggest we pick March/April when we have Spring on the Northern, and our friends down under have autumn on the Southern hemisphere i.e. roughly comparable ambient conditions.

Re: Tach Race 2021?
I am in as send in only contestant..... and financial support for the CD....
As long as there are physical and or monetary prizes I want a proctored exam....
I also can not participate in Video...A skill set and equipment I do not possess
I do hope someone steps up.. I will even fund the CD a reasonable compensation for the effort
Unfortunately past CDs will attest it is a hard one man job...receiving every entry, logging in, PM and e-mail coordinations , getting propellers, receiving Cox Aluminum Test stands , dorking with dinky screws attaching engines to the stands, negotiating rules and different categories following CEF all the time to answer questions or send information, getting or blending Proper agreed on fuel, photography/video, logs of results, cleaning to send back, packaging, trave to post office...and Ron will attest...this is not the full list
I am not meaning to spoil the deal...but understanding this---- all of us can do everything possible to reduce the workload..
Example...postage paid and addressed return packaging
Sending a well tuned running engine...not something that needs 15~30 min of troubleshooting and adjustment / repair...perhaps a spare glow head
Everyone agree brief use of electric finger is OK
TeeDees Tank requirements agreed on ...My TeeDees are optimized for Bladder...but your bladder may be different from mine...Thus obviously we need to agree on Hard tanks or listen to what CD thinks is reasonable or fair to all....simplistically I think hard tanks are fair to handicap everybody to a standard configuration

It seems there is some interest, but not a lot.
I would do it myself, but I am so wishy washy these days with work and I actually would like to enter for once.
Surely someone could step up....

Re: Tach Race 2021?
I think gentleman's rules with a video would be fine. Maybe a reed and TD class 10% fuel and a 4 1/4" - 4" APC prop. or something that is easy to find. Probably just .049s. No one seems to run Conquests any more except me. I've been thinking of a Bee on a bladder lately. If there are no prizes, then no one will lie about results, because you are only kidding yourself. If the videos are posted, then the results are obvious and no one needs to be the judge or fiddle with engines over the mail. Just my thoughts.

I think you meant "what is there to win?" Yuck yuck yuck in a Barney Rubble laugh.
Actually, the only thing to win is bragging rights. Men compete often enough for just that!

Re: Tach Race 2021?
But Mr. Fred,
If you limit the Tee Dee tank to a standard hard tank, then this becomes an IROC race with no competitive drivers.
I think letting the brakes off on tanks will encourage getting some impressive Tee Dee numbers, and will allow for hot-rodding them to within an inch of their lives.
Maybe consider fielding an unlimited class for reedies and Tee Dees, and a stock class for same. That's four distinct categories, and that may be too many to the point of having only a few contestants.
Admin, can an impromptu questionnaire be posted whereby potential contestants could tick a box for each class they intend to compete in? Leave the sure up for a week...this isn't a vote thing as much as a test to see how deep the field may be for each class. If one or two classes are too small, then collapse it down to just stock reedies and Tee Dees.
If the field is deep enough, then pop up a by-name sign-up list so the contestants have publicly announced (promised?) their intent to compete.
I'm only a spectator in this one. Truly I hope to fly shortly. Last year all I did was break in a Fox .35 and video a Babe Bee for someone.

Don't go getting people too excited! We'll end up with a heap of competitors and no competition.
It's a huge commitment for anyone agreeing to take on the job, so how about we stop talking about what the competition will look like and ask who's willing to put in the hard yards. The video race will certainly be far less responsibility than previous races, but it still requires a very willing person to run it.

I could see what I can do. Maybe using a Google form.

You raise good points, OER,
I don't know.if anyone would CD without having a rough idea of how many contestants though.

Re: Tach Race 2021?
I think the only people to ever CD in this forum were Mark Boesen, Kim Stricker and me in that order. I may have missed someone, but either way it’s always the same few guys.
A true accurate race is one person running all submitted engines on same prop and fuel under same environmental conditions. While I am not opposed to video submissions for those overseas, I think stateside it needs to be done by direct submission. For those overseas contestants it would have to be agreed upon that the environmental variables will be a player and results not contestable if the environment is a factor in the way the engine performs. We could do a stateside and overseas contest and the winner of each would then race against each other by video for the world title.
I am also not opposed to sending my submission(s)overseas if a CD across the pond steps up. Keep in mind this is Mark Boesen’s baby so permission is required. He doesn’t frequent here much anymore so he may not be too concerned. I would still run it by him.
Actual rules are up to whomever steps up!

Re: Tach Race 2021?
I should add that being a CD does have it’s rewards. Apart from what Fred has offered there are usually items that are not wanted back. I always receive stuff from Matt and Bernie to run the races as well.
It’s fun on race day and is great to get all that castor slinging, the hard part is the stress of getting every engine to run and to take good records, video and pictures. The shipping gets a little stressful too, but everything almost always gets back to the owner.
I am really hoping someone steps up to the plate. These kinds of things are good for the hobby, suppliers and our forum.

Re: Tach Race 2021?
In order for it to work it's gotta be one place, one prop, one fuel and one CD turning the needle, eliminating as many variables as possible.
Maybe consider only one or two classes?
Its was my idea, but I never CD'd, Chris McMillian did it the first year.

Re: Tach Race 2021?
Sorry Mark, I stand corrected. For some reason I thought it was you. I agree with what you said about the variables being kept to a bare minimum.
I think the concern with overseas is the shipping costs/duties and engines possibly getting lost. If we had 2 CD’s one in the US and one in the EU we could run two separate races with the winners from each continent competing in a video race for grins.
That’s a lot to ask at this point though.

Re: Tach Race 2021?
Well, it's been almost a week since the last comment in this thread, so I think we're safe to assume that the level of interest doesn't justify the work required to get this thing off the ground. Don't get me wrong, it would be great to see the Tach Race back on the agenda, but I don't think the current times and circumstances are right just now. None of us know what the next couple of years will bring, so I guess we all need to focus a little more intently on the things closest to home. Thanks for keeping the fire burning Ron. Just turn down the flame nice and low so it's still alight when the time is right.

somewhat saner by then. I've been eying some ''out there''

A little self imposed mind cleanse. A few days of libations, a
