Re: After Run?
Sorry guys, had to clean up the topic a bit, you've had your fun, lets get back on topic.
Re: After Run?
For those who throttle down and land, you might consider removing the fuel line at the end of your flying session and try starting the engine to run off the fuel left in the crankcase.
Unburned methanol gathers moisture and unburned nitro creates nitric acid. Castor provides some protection, but most synthetics do not.
There is a difference between after-run and long term storage. After run should get you to the next weekend. Long term storage should include a more thorough cleaning and a good application of the oil of your choice.
I have had success with most oils but for long term I prefer air tool oil or "Rislone". BTW, according to a Marvel rep, Marvel Air Tool Oil is MMO with rust inhibitor. I have a hundred or so engines and, so far, none have died of rust. Perhaps Xenalube is even better, I have not yet tried it.

Re: After Run?
For an after run oil that should take you to the next weekend or two, you'll need a good protecting oil that is solvable in methanol. While many oils would give adequate long-term protection, few of them are solvable in methanol and there is a risk of extra wear when you start them. That's where the dedicated after-run oils comes in, I have not been able to find any other readily obtainable oils that will do that (dissolve in methanol).

This should ALSO include drawing the fuel out of your tank! Some years ago, we had a "Non-Club" (our term for our loosely knit bunch of R/C'rs) that flew at the airport in Cairo. Every Spring, some of our guys would show up with models that hadn't been flown since October, and crank the daylights out of them, trying to get them to start and stay running. Almost always, upon investigation, we'd find that they had just left the remaining fuel in the plane's tank from when it was flown six months earlier.
Once this milky crap was flushed from the tank and engine, everything was suddenly fine. In spite of this amazing abuse, most of the engines seemed to hang in there indefinitely through the summers of flying. Of course most of these were also the sleeved sport engines, so there were no ball bearing to deteriorate.

Probably because of the seals, o rings and diaphram on a YS Mitch.
But if it's got nasties that will attack those perhaps it's not
a good idea to use it anyway.

Here ya go Kris. I have used this stuff in the past and it works very well, down to the last little bit in my bottle. It was sold here in the states for a long time, but I think the company(here) doing so folded and sold the formula.

(snipped) Blends with methanol alcohol and gasoline
Edit: now I remember, the company's name here that did bottle and sell was called Racers Choice. The excellent engine/carb/backplate sealant they also sold is still available here, I reccomend this to all because it works really good.

Cox International wrote:Alright, here is the story.
In 2007 my wife wanted to open up some on-line stores (incl. eBay) for adult-oriented wear, toys and other products. For her stage name she called herself "Xena"; tying in with the fantasy about "Xena the Warrior Princess". Hence her eBay store "Xenalook". One of her products was "Xenalube".
Because she was too busy with her other ventures she never got around to that project and I took over the store and kept the name.
When I created an after-run-oil she (mischievous person that she is) suggested to call it "Xenalube"
Even though my order of Radios, etc. just arrived from CI, (Thank you BTW!), I will HAVE to place another to add this to my arsenal now! ;0)

Yep...all the COOL engine guys have at least one bottle parked on their table...surrounded by engines and engine parts, of course ! Although it WOULD be nice if Bernie designed a Marvel Mystery Oil-esk label for them !!!!

Re: After Run?
You guys getting Xenalube make sure you don't get it mixed up with stuff used for the other purpose. :-)

Re: After Run?
What is the proper way to use after oil? Do you disassemble the engine, clean it up and lightly coat everything? Or do you run it through like fuel?

Drop it in te intake and/or exhaust ports and flip the engine over.
Re: After Run?
if you have one with front intake (teedee/medallion), put one or two drops into the
carburetor, and flip it over. but make sure the inlet is closed so you dont get too much
oil into the crank.
