Finished - Cox BW airplane
Well almost, still have to put on the decals, steady hands required, might need some help there.
Confession time. I just slapped this thing together. Tried new things, experimented. Pin hinges inlayed on 1/16" balsa, different incidence angles, very little rudder deflection, dacron lead-outs, SIG airfoil wing. Probably going to cut the dacron to 25/30' and install on a Cox handle.
As mentioned the BW engine is a no go, too nose heavy with it. Got to select one of three Babe Bees, probably the middle one made up from mostly new parts. Did a tail skid vice wheel, easier.
Going to do another. Fuselage is a clone of the Jim Walker Firebaby that does not balance like the original. Have to move the wing closer to the engine mount among other things. Note to self: correct all the mistakes you made with this one.
Edit add: Got on the net trying to reeducate myself about how to string a Cox handle..........it's been 50+ years...
I found this gem from Kim.

Bob, that model looks to me to be very “Well Done” for a slice of Rare Cox plastic/balsa!

Re: Finished - Cox BW airplane
Thanks guys, Nice flyer......maybe now.
I replaced the Black Widow with the built Babe Bee, and whew......it balances perfectly. With the BW, fingers at the leading edge it would do a nose dive to vertical.
Sit's lower than the original too, I cut the reliefs higher in the mount for the landing gear. Decals next.
Levent covered all the bases with cockpit decals.

Re: Finished - Cox BW airplane
Rather than wait for Mark I just went ahead and added the decals with apologies to Levent as they are not put on perfectly.
Close match to the original.
I did not scallop the leading edge of the horizontal stab because I did not think that it matched the wing so I left it, but it's growing on me. If I do another to scale (accurate clone) I will include it. I have always been curious about the cloth hinges. The original Firebaby featured a single hinge located under the tail assembly.
I do see that the reproduction used the same crimp style control horn that I used on mine. It would be a simple matter to wet some 1/16" balsa and form it over a like structure and apply it just ahead of the cockpit. Might do that on a later version too.

That actually turned out quite well, Shaky hands my foot!
If you design one with a built up wing and a beam mount I’m in!

Re: Finished - Cox BW airplane
Thanks all.
I bet your decals will be downloaded many times Levent, so many applications within our hobby. I used "sticky backed" paper decals, couldn't wait for the waterslides which would have been easier to apply. Those sticky backs, once you hit a corner to airfoil there is no going back. I used witness marks to locate and got lucky with no wrinkles.
Built up wing Ron, beam mounts and snug the wing up close to the firewall and you have unique Baby Ringmaster. Would be an eye catcher and a lot of fun.

to see if they knew of a Cox - Jim Walker - Lodela connection. It's bugging me that this has gone unnoticed for so many years.

Excellent, looks great.
Have you found anything about the connection between Jim Walker - Cox - Lodela?
Regards from Mexico.

Hello, great to see you here again.
An oldie thread, I reviewed it again. I dislocated my arm patting myself on my back as it did turn out rather well. But the credit goes to Levent, without the decals it is nothing.
I did research the Walker/Cox/Lodea connection but it's results are lost in the gray matter of my brain. I think I did document it though, will have to go though my files to see if I can find it.

Re: Finished - Cox BW airplane
Good to see you make a facsimile of it, Bob, well done. Just imagine if one came across a stash of NOS Jim Walker plastic fuselages, what they could do. But, just the same, to not have such luxuries, you did the next best thing.
I can see the advantages of why Cox México used a legacy non-Cox part to make a Cox airplane for the local market. It and materials used for flying surface construction would reduce costs to make it more affordable.
Money there is harder to come buy. Our Salvation Army pastors grew up in México, the wife as a child, her parents could not afford a bicycle, so they would chip in and rent one for short periods.
Much less would they be able to afford a Cox model airplane with engine, and accessories to fly it. The hobby was for the better to do.

Re: Finished - Cox BW airplane
Thank you, good to be back.
When I was a boy I received various Lodela/Cox airplanes, my first airplane a PT19 then a Mustang P51, Mustang Miss America, Cessna 150 Aerobat, the red Cox Cub (The Lodela version came with wheels and skis but not floats like the one from Cox in the US) and of course the FireBaby that was the best flying airplane.
Great memories of those airplanes and then the profile balsa models made by "Productos de Aeromodelismo Cobra" these were copies of the Sterling planes. I built the Thunderjet, Eindecker and Cherokee, then I built I couple of Scientific the Golden Hawk and Zig Zag and my next 1/2A airplane was a Lil Jumping Bean.
Here is a photo of one of the profile models made by Cobra.
