The Sioux took to the skies

The Sioux took to the skies
We took out the Sioux for it's first flight today. I wasn't so keen on trying the diesel for the initial flight. My son was not going to take no for a answer. The Davis Diesel head blew out the disc which is why at the beginning of the video there's a pause and then the engine is started again. I'm going to try the brass shim stock for making discs vs the Teflon units that last from 5 seconds to 15 minutes. My son was ecstatic as he's been wanting to do a diesel flight for years. The Davis head was removed and the RJL head was used for the flight. We also put the prop on backwards and I'm glad we did. The plane went a good 300 plus ft high. Prior to me leaving the house, I shrunk up the covering which resulted in the outboard tip having some washout. I'm glad I left it in because it caused the right tip to drop in the glide and spiral down rather quick. I need to open up the turn in the right hand glide after the engine stops.

Nifty Ken, almost lost the second flight, touch and go for a minute there.
Last time I tried this I never saw it again.
Nice father/son time.

Re: The Sioux took to the skies
Bob, these sheet balsa wing planes can be a bit tricky at times. I think what might be happening is that one side of the wing has a tendency to warp. This is more than likely due to the dope. I've heated this wing panel and twisted it numerous times. As a result, my trimming is changing from week to week. Typically the plane goes into a tight left turn rather quickly. It didn't do that yesterday and as it headed towards the trees my concerns were growing. I don't own many Pee Wee engines and I certainly don't want to lose it.
