Springtime in N. Rhode Island USA
last month.. 4/25
today..
I title this next photo Fragile Yes.. When I was a little boy, we moved across town to a rural (RFD) section of Franklin, MA. where the property abutted woods that were an average 1/2mi. deep before crossing a road. That was before Interstate Highway 495 went through the back woods in 1968.
Mom and dad would take me for walks down the cart-paths through those backwoods. I remember junked-cars, skunk-cabbage.. and the way it smelled. Closer to home, there was a stonewall that cut straight-up through the woods from down at the road. There were meadows on both sides of the wall.. with blueberry-bushes and junipers dispersed.
What I remember most vividly.. are the lady slippers. Wild Orchids basically.. which depend completely on an amazing botanical perfect-storm if you will.. to produce.. ?? offspring?? seeds? I was told to never "pick them" because they were endangered.. and it was against the law.
They've been growing here behind our house in the past Springtimes.. and today I saw one..

Roddie you bring back fond memories.
The Lady Slipper caught my eye right away. Native to New England and Northern climates I first saw them in New Hampshire growing up. We were also taught never to pick one. Such simple and fragile beauty.
Rhode Island was where our children grew up and experienced life at it's best. Even today the forests, sea food, and climate are frequently discussed. The friends, pets, backyard picnics and even the insects are remembered. Our backyard was rocky and wild loaded with vegetation and the occasional Lady Slipper which was always left undisturbed.
About the only picture I have of the Tiverton house. Kids cleaned up for Sunday School. Unusual.

Yo... brother Eric, I also am having trouble walking.. after resting/sitting for more than 20 minutes; when I stand and walk it hurts like a father-raper. After a minute or so of walking.. I'm ok. I'm on my feet for the majority of my 8 hr. workday. After lunch-break (30 min.) and any more than 20 min. in the car.. and I'm hurtin' as soon as I try to walk.
I saw a Podiatrist..
If you fix "Kieffer" pear-preserves from that tree down in the "back 7" bro.. I'll want some. And.. I'll see to it that you receive some of Lynne's homemade basil pesto in return.
I viewed the weblink on the rose-stalk/potato planting. I just might try that!
Stay safe brother!

Hi ya' Robert. I've had that photo saved since you first posted it here! Are Mark and the girls all fairly local to you now; there in WV? (btw.. I love the Buick..) Tiverton..... It's nice that you have good memories from there.
As you know; I'm a native of S.E. Massachusetts (Franklin).. but I recall Tiverton, RI.. from high school days (1976/77) My old friend George (RIP) had a friend who lived there. His name was "Tosti".. and he married a Franklin girl. If that rings a bell.. we can revisit in a PM.
Thanks so much for commenting Robert.

Having lived most of the 70's 'Straight Outta Campton' NH, we learned early on, don't mess with the Lady Slippers or they'll come n gitcha. Thanks for the flashback!

Hi Roddie, Tosti doesn't ring a bell. We bought that house in 1967 and left in early 1972 for Patuxent River in Maryland so perhaps a bit after our time there.
I didn't realize that I had posted that picture before, my memory only goes back to yesterday. . Wish I had never sold that Buick. The three cars pictured are perhaps my three most favorites of all I have ever owned. When we left, I sold the VW to a friend and my wife drove the Mustang and I the Buick to our next destination.
Love your backyard nature pictures. Nothing like that here in WV. Maybe it's the elevation. All three kids live within 45 minutes.

Yea.. my knowing about Tiverton wouldn't be for another 5-6 years after you moved away. Sometime in 77-78 when I graduated high school.
I may have mentioned a while back; there's an old Buick Riviera, abandoned in a fenced-in/over-grown lot near me in Uxbridge, MA. It's faded-out blue.. and I think of you every time I see it. I think it's a 63 or 64. I'll try to get a photo.
I'm glad that we haven't had any bears around here. I'd like to see deer again though. It's been years since we've seen one. I bought a salt-lick at the "Leeway" farm-supply down the road last week. I still had the wire-basket from several years ago. Can you see it mounted on the tree? (.. up the path on the right..)
Here it is on the left.. looking down the path into our back yard..

Eric, it's obvious. The car is oil fired can't you see the Beckett oil burners in the front and back seat.

.. the one I told you about Robert. I stopped by this afternoon on my way home from work. I didn't see the car at first.. because there is now a boat/trailer blocking the view. There's an old drive-in movie screen in that lot.. off 146A/Quaker Highway.
Here are two photos that I was able to get.
I think it's either a 63 or 64. The nose is good. That's what made me notice the old girl a few years ago. The boat is blocking the money-shot..

Yes, the headlights are the give-away, and you can't see them. Definitely a Riveria though.
