What is the point in butchering a perfectly good cox fuel tank? Just put one of those plastic backs on it if you you waht to use a bigger fuel tank.

Whomever did it may have needed the extra length the stunt tank provides, it does have a car flywheel on it. Then again the same thing could have been accomplished with just one hole.

In the 70s, Cox sold engines with an 8cc tank drilled with a bunch holes to Jerobee for their cars. Helped with heat dissipation. Can't say for certain the one in the first picture left the factory like that or not.
I hate finding these engines with holes drilled in the tank, but then again, much of it was done back in the day when you just could go back down to the LHS and buy a couple more.
