This has been a wonderful build thread -- really nice to see such clean work. With social distancing and self quarantine in effect, that Cub yellow offers a real bright spot. Good job!!

VERY NICE TROY, Thanks for the pictures and build log.
“Love them Cubbies” if you’re from Chicago it has a whole different meaning, but as a youngster, and still to this day, to me it’s the Airplane!! I have a few in my hanger and as my avatar here! Been watching Doug and Becky’s activity on FB, with similar thoughts of these 250 g or less models are gonna be BIG if and when the RID settles in, with the dark cloud of the FAA removal of all exemptions. It’ll probably be illegal to skip stones out at the lake.
MEANWHILE: fly’’m like ya stole them!

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
Thanks guys! Cubs have always been a happy thing for me! I took the easy way out on the Continental engine by simply making the facade from covering. The kit included the balsa pieces to layer for 3D correctness but I didn't have any appropriate fuel-proof paint on hand to seal them of I used them. Making the graphics from covering was a quick and easy way to get a bit of stand-way-off scale appearance.

Thanks Mauricio! I have 1.5" and 1.75" wheels on order. Not very large for this scale size. Wheels are easy to experiment with as I go along.

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
Fuel-proofing was done with Z-Poxy Finishing Resin. I installed a Brodak 1/2oz tank. I decided to test it for leaks before installation and was glad I did. It had no flow from the pickup line. Completely plugged! My attempts to rod it out failed, so I turned to the web and looked for a replacement. Everyone was out of stock. Cox Int. had 1/3 and 3/4oz sizes so I ordered them both(along with more Cox stuff!). Then I decided to take a chance by reworking the tank I had. I was able to melt the solder around the pickup line and pull it out a tad, resealing with solder. It worked! Good flow now and it passed the pressure test as well. Then I was able to finish the install behind the firewall. A 6V 400mah NiMH battery resides below the tank with just enough room to squeeze it all in.

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
The Cub Yellow covering is from Willy Nillies. The black graphics were made from Monokote. The bear cub logo on the tail was printed out on a standard color printer on office paper from the pdf file that Willy Nillies provides on their site. I cut it out and attached it with a glue stick. Clear Transparent Ultracote Lite was applied over the logo to protect it from the elements(slime!). I installed 1.75" lightweight wheels. I think I would prefer some smaller ones to retain a more stock appearance but I don't have them on hand yet. A Dubro micro tailwheel was installed on a 1/16" ply base. The airplane has a Spektrum AR410 rx, Dymond 47 servos on the rudder and elevator with Dubro .032 micro pushrods, and a micro power switch.

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
Congratulations. Very nicely built and finished plane. I am looking forward to any maiden flight info. How much is the all up weight without fuel? How many channels? What sort of RX battery? Sorry if you have already given but I missed that info.

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
Thanks, balogh! It is 2-channel rud/elev. Spektrum AR410 rx, 6V 400mah NiMH battery, Dymond 47 servos as already mentioned. I don't have a weight yet. I usually stop by my previous place of employment to weigh my finished models on their accurate lab scales. With this pandemic, I'm unable to pop in for such an unnecessary visit. I would guess it to be around 7oz.

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
Thanks Tee Bee. I wish you a safe flight! We have a small digital kitchen scale that I typically use to weigh my planes. Accurate enough I guess.
Looking forward to the maiden..we have a sort of voluntary curfew in place here but as long as you do not mingle with people within a 5 feet social distance you are allowed to go out even to the field for sports..

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
We can go out as well as long as we don't gather with others to take care of essential needs. Outdoor exercise is approved, so I've been to the local park several days this week and stood alone in the field flying stunt kites in the spring winds. Other walkers/joggers seemed to enjoy my kite flying from a safe distance. Even the local police have driven by and waved.

Beautiful model !!, congratulations ... possibly and as soon as you can you will fly it, success for you.
Here in my country we are in quarantine, it is not allowed to move freely, people must stay at home.
There are special permits for some jobs, but in my case I have closed my business to avoid contact with other people.
Please take care friend, this enemy is potentially dangerous, very dangerous.
Hugs for you and your family...

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
Thanks, Mauricio! I am considered an essential worker, so my normal shifts continue as well as overtime hours. At work, we try to minimize contact with others as much as possible. While I'm off work, I don't associate with anyone other than my wife. She has a suppressed immune system due to her chronic lung disease and I don't wish to bring the virus home to her! The model projects have been good therapy during this otherwise stressful time. Something that brings satisfaction and can be enjoyed in solitude. Stay safe!

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
That is really sweet! Just what I have in mind for my first foray into NITRO RC! Small and Cox powered! Pretty.much bored with the electric stuff. If an .020 will power a 30" Cub I wonder how much bigger you could go with an .049?

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
I have converted this 34" span Toucan plane from electric to glow and fly it mostly with a COX TeeDee 049...051 engine...a ball to fly.

Re: Willy Nillies Cub 250
Thanks! That's a loaded question, OhBee. I've seen 6ft span gliders towed skyward by a simple reedie .049 on a pod. I built a couple of Pong Two 2-channel sport planes back in 2007. One of them flew just fine with a Black Widow .049 with a 45" wingspan and weighed about 22oz. If speed is the mission, you need to think smaller, lighter. My Sharkface is powered by a RR1 .049 and goes like stink with a 24" span. Different designs with different performance parameters. The Willy Nillies kits are designed to weigh in somewhere under 250g or 8.8oz. With sufficient wing area, that is an ideal weight for an .020 to move it along. With the lightweight construction, they are not designed to withstand the loads that might come with a larger, heavier, more powerful engine. With that said, I think a few of his designs could be flown with a reedie .049 if attention is given to beefing up the wing spars, etc. Bigger engines add more weight. The eternal aircraft design dilemma! You can reach a point of diminishing return if not careful. More is not always better. The aircraft performs best when built at the designed weight and flown at the designed speed. Most of my best flying .049-powered all-around sport planes weigh somewhere around 12oz and span 30-36 inches. I saw a nice flying J3 Cub a couple of years ago at an event with about 40" span and a throttled TD .049. Looked like it was built pretty light and smart. In other words, there is much more to consider than just wingspan when sizing a plane for an engine. The airfoil selection, target weight, wing loading, desired speed, proper balance, and much more must be considered. With all that said, I sure hope the little Pee Wee .020 on this thing will make me proud!
