The Medallion .049 Runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got my engine today---here is my Facebook Post:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks to the extreme generosity of one of my flying buds over on the Cox Engine Forum, my currently un-throttled Carl Goldberg "Ranger 42" will be cruising next summer's S.M.A.L.L. Skys behind a vintage "barrel throttle" Medallion .049.
Medallions are sort of an "interim" engine between the good-natured reedies and high-compression Tee Dee engines, and like the Tee Dees, are beam-mounted and will only run in one direction.
The Ranger presently has a Medallion .049 that runs wide open 'till it's fuel is gone and then glides in for a landing. This engine will allow low/slow passes down the flightline, along with the option to land at will.
(Flying bud Tony will once again be asked to step up for these as I shoot some video/photos of the moment!)
Gonna be a fun summer!
Thanks Rene !!!!!!

Re: The Medallion .049 Runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHOO-HOO! She’s Alive and Running! I Knew you would get her going. Top and bottom RPM range seems adequate, although the factory indicates a bit higher top end on testing random selected engines with a 5”x3p prop. The low end will definitely give you some nice slow fly-bys. I never tore it apart for a good internal cleaning, so if running it slobbering rich doesn’t help clean out the old castor, maybe a good cleaning and polishing of the crankshaft would help the top end speed. Yup, spring will be here before you know it! And Rangers will be in the air! Waiting for videos.
It’s great to see so many happy people!

Those numbers are likely with a open exhaust or is that photo of the manual showing
numbers with the throttle system?
numbers with the throttle system?

Brad, you are right on! Those numbers came from a “standard” open exhaust 049 instruction sheet, from our instruction files. That’s where the difference is!

Re: The Medallion .049 Runs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, it ought to gain a little bit if I take the compression up a some, but if I can get somewhere close to 15K with dependable runs, and throttling, it'll haul the Ranger, and I'll be happy!
