z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
hello, i got a z-37 cmalak electric rc airplane from my little brother in a trade last night, i would love to convert this airplane to cox .049 power, i have a couple ideas on how todo this sortof thing buy i have never done a electric to nitro conversion before, i am considering my baby bee, or my golden bee to use in the airplane, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hi Mitch.
If you want to fly for more than about a minute, use the Golden Bee. Also if you want to any kind of aerobatics, use the Golden Bee as it has the stunt tank. You will need to cobble some kind of clunk to a flexible fuel line - the fuel will be sloshing around the line resulting in a jittery, hard to needle run if you use a stationary pickup.
Feel free to ask all the questions....

I am just looking to put around the sky and slowly glide back to earth with a dead engine

i have not a clue, it seems that the wing weighs less than 4oz, same with the fuselage

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
Ok just make sure it is bui strong enough to take a .049!
Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
i will, the fuselage is fiber glass, i've never had an airplane like that before

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
Ok more rigid than balsa so you may want some foam insulation in the engine bay.
Fiber glass more dense so vibrations travel better.

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
cold i just use the expanding spray foam, and just fill the front end of the fuse?

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
hey, good progress on my z-37 cmelak, i got my 1/4" firewall installed and also installed my early cox golden bee .049
ill post some pics tomorrow, i still have to inject the expanding foam into the body of the plane, other than that the conversion is almost done

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
i also found out who makes it... its "fvk models" specs are
Construction is fiberglass fuselage, built-up film-covered wing, and film-covered sheet balsa tail. The motor (Speed 280 brushed) with 4:1 gearbox is factory installed; the wings and tail surfaces are covered and hinged; includes 3-blade prop, landing gear, wheels, control horns and rods, decals. 38" WS, 30" length, Flying Weight 380-400 grams (13 - 14 ounces).

A geared down 280?
Hold on tight!

That was my plan too.
If it is too much, try an .020 or even an .030 if you can find one.

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
I'm not sure about the foam Mitch.
If you do, keep it to a minimum. Strangely, it does weigh quite a bit.
And based purely on my 010 exploits with a plane that weighs less
than 4 and a half ounces I think that your 38in span 14 oz 'monster' is going to struggle.
Conventional wisdom in lekky circles is
50watts per pound will fly'justabout.
100 watts per pound OK for sport (ish) flying
200+ watts per pound 3d
I think you're already struggling to be at 50wpp with the 049. Forget smaller engine
I tell you what I've done,-
I put carbon fibre push rods in.
I took the plakky case off my RX
I bought a 150mah Losi rx battery from your side for 8 bucks/15grams ten mins of flying this AM still got 110mah in it.
Good Luck
John

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
Well a .049 will pull a 14oz 48" easy!
A pee wee probably not but a tee dee 020 it would fly but not well.

Re: z-37 cmelak, rc electric to nitro conversion
I'm just going by my (very limited admittedly) experience Indra.
What I always tell my pupils if they haven't already got a
Plane of their own is to buy an engine at the top of the power
Range rather than the bottom.
For me there's nothing worse than an underpowered aircraft
But for Learners why make it difficult by having to nurse
A plane round rather than fly it?

Yeah i get that under powered sucks but what i hate more is over pitched props that just don't climb well!
