Cox Engine of The Month
Ok, everybody gets a week off
Ok, everybody gets a week off
from my posts and pictures.
Heading deep into the woods of New Hampshire on the shore of Onway Lake where I grew up. No phone no wi fi. Visit old classmates and our summer cottage on the lake. Me on the front porch steps.
Heading to NYC on our class trip.
Most are getting together for a party at a different lake.
I spent the next 59 years with the prettiest girl in the picture.
It's been about 63 years since I have seen these friends. We started together in first grade and graduated together.
See ya in a week or so...........

Re: Ok, everybody gets a week off
Ok, everyone enjoy your vacation? No matter I'm back anyway.
Thousands of miles, lot's of memories. Friends/Classmates from decades ago. My home town has changed, population increased from 900 to 10,000 residents. Stayed in a cottage a stones throw from our old cottage on Onway Lake.
Me in front of the store in Exeter where I believe I bought my first Cox engines. It's been 70+ years.
Cottage
My favorite position
Ate lots of these

Re: Ok, everybody gets a week off
Hi Bob
I think it’s great that the same toyshop you bought engines and stuff from 70yrs ago is still going.
I live in a small city of just under 90,000 people and we have just one model shop left that wouldn’t be half that age.
The only toyshops left are part of the big department stores or chains like Toyworld.
I don’t think a picture gets any better than that lakeside cabin in the trees. What a paradise.
If there is a paradise we go to when we die, I want to go there.

Nice place! The scenery looks a lot like here in Finland. The cottages are of a little different style and we only have crawfish here, no lobsters. A paradise for sure!
Glad to have you back

Wow Eric, I missed that. I'm never going on vacation without internet again!! Ha, it was wonderful. Never had time to miss it. We played Poker and Rummy evenings and made S'mores by firelight.
Great flight. 20' lines and the little fella is FAST. You ended up like I did, horizontal on the ground. Your son did great.
The woman is my daughter, Mark went too and was the principle driver. They have a history in Raymond as we used to ship them off to their aunts house when school let out.
Only thing missing was my wife. She was from Raymond too. Asked me to marry her not 50 yards from that cabin. Yup. You read that right. Best thing that ever happened to me, saved me from myself.
This is what our old cabin looks like now (see first picture above). They must have bull dosed it to the ground and built new.
"Submarine rock" looks just like a submarine from the shore, and lake pictures.

Welcome back Robert! What a beautiful lake. I enjoyed the photos and your commentary.. and especially the old toy shop!
Re: Ok, everybody gets a week off
Welcome back, and I also agree that it is neat that there is still a toy shop where there was one many years ago. Great pictures, and am glad you had a good vacation, and food so it seems. I do wonder though about that 'relaxing' picture. Seems to me I see a very familiar type of glass sitting on the table next to teh feet... That contents of that glass wouldn't happen to have anything to do with teh 'relaxing', would it...

It does look suspicious doesn't it. But I no longer drink. Gave up the hard stuff after our senior prom. Took me two days to recover after that one, actually spent in the cabin behind the cottage. How I got there, I don't remember.
It's cigarette soaked water compliments of my safety conscious daughter not wanting to burn the neighborhood down. They frown on that up there.

You're making me homesick Bob! I lived in northern New Hampshire during my high school and college days, basically all of the 70's. We used to spend a few weeks in the summer at a camp on Squam Lake that belonged to a friend of my dad. Thanks for bringing back some of the best memories I have.

Squam Lake, now your bring me back.
Been there, famous for it's Loon population.
For those that may not know.
Loons are water birds, only going ashore to mate and incubate eggs. Their legs are placed far back on their bodies, allowing efficient swimming but only awkward movement on land.
Loons are like airplanes in that they need a runway for takeoff. In the case of loons, they need from 30 yards up to a quarter-mile (depending on the wind) for flapping their wings and running across the top of the water in order to gain enough speed for lift-off. Sorta like Eric's and Chancey's models.*
You must have heard them calling to one another, a haunting call that to the uninitiated can bring chills.
We had at least one pair at the cabin. I hadn't heard them call since the mid fifties. You see them swimming in the middle of the lake then disappear under water for thirty yards then resurface. One did their awkward "water walk" for at least a quarter mile using their wings and feet to propel them forward without ever leaving the water.
Leo Stans featured them in his "Collector Edition" prints.
* It's alright guys, at least you get them in the air.

Loons are really something. Their landings look more like a Grumman Widgeon than anything else.
Their song is mournful and unforgettable. I always get a kick out of movies that use loon calls as a sound effect. It is almost never near water, and certainly not in northern New England.
Yeah, I'm homesick now.

Well, watch "On Golden Pond" with Katheryn Hepburn and Henry and Jane Fonda filmed at Squam Lake and get really, really homesick.
Trouble is, you almost have to ride the Merritt Parkway in Connecticut to get there from NC. It's a bumper to bumper parking lot.
Thanks for those pictures, much better than my description.
