TD .010 Black case
I bought a TD .010 that was sold as 1961 version. I have known sellers for years. Anyway it arrives and is a black case engine mounted on red dirty tank. Not to happy as it was sold as 1961 model. Cylinder is faded but good. Engine does have excellent compression and tank besides dirty is decent. Cleaned tank up a little and checked it all seems good. I did get a reasonable price but its not engine I wanted and paid for. I guess I'll return it and get my $60.00 back. It came just engine and plastic tank, nothing else and no fuel tubing. I have some Prather small tubing but the Cox tubing would be better. Seller claims he did not know difference in a Cox 1961 and later Black case. Hard to understand as he is long time modeler. ????

I would keep if I were you.
A .010 for $60 is still rare no matter what type.
Was it on eBay?
Was a picture provided?

TD .010
It was sold in private offering. Engine is cute and does appear to be fine shape. Tank will need another cleaning but undamaged. Very smooth and great compression. I just wanted a Red case with the gold to match my mint TD .020's.

TD .010
Yes I would fly it. I have project for one TD .020 in original Top Flight School Boy kit. Had one as kid FF but this one will be RC. With modern equipment .010 is a go. Just need to decide on plane. These are amazing little engines.

Re: TD .010 Black case
You there is also a nice video of it on YouTube.
Actually this is the 50th aniversary of the design so it seems fitting to build one.

Re: TD .010 Black case
Did you already send out my parts?
Otherwise I would be interest to take it for $60!

Re: TD .010 Black case
I have not recieved payment for any parts but they are ready to ship. I may keep this engine as it does seem to be in excellent shape.mr_cox wrote:Did you already send out my parts?

Re: TD .010 Black case
Payment for Bastiaan's parts should arrive Monday. I ended up sending the MO on Friday not Thursday as originally anticipated.
As to your .010, I have to ask if the seller was unable to distinguish a 1961 from a later model then how did he even know to advertize it as a 1961?

Maybe he believed all .010 were made in 1961 or mis remembered purchassing it in 1961.

Seller is old and very well could have not known difference. Then again who knows. Thats a big mistake claiming 1961 to Estes version.

Re: TD .010 Black case
There may be another explanation. Some 20 plus years ago the carb on one of my .010’s developed a crack in the neck where the venture threads in. Got a replacement but was told that the spares only came in black. No big deal at the time; couldn’t have cared less about the color. But I also now have an engine with a black carb body and a red tank. Based on my experience, I would say the color of the tank is more likely to represent the date of the original engine rather than the color of the carb body.dankar04 wrote:nitroairplane wrote:cribbs74 wrote:As to your .010, I have to ask if the seller was unable to distinguish a 1961 from a later model then how did he even know to advertize it as a 1961?

or vice versa
Or vice versa, replacement tanks were avilable from cox at one point, but only in black color.Big Al wrote:There may be another explanation. If I am right, the crankcase color is the true determination of the age of the engine in the case of 010`s. I don`t think the natural aluminum(silver) were available in the original, first production run/s version.
It is hard for some of us to imagine, but a lot of the people in our awesome hobby have never owned a cox,and some people that have owned the cox engines but aren`t really into them just aren`t up to snuff on all the info.
I fly r/c,have flown c/l but don`t know a lot of c/l info.....just a for instance.
The guy this engine came from may have been very misinformed when he bought it,it is a 1961 design. Some engines never change hands, some get a lot of traveling around and have many owners.

I believe the gold cased ones are the Cox TD .010's and Estes came out with silver cases and black plastic.

Not 2 certain
I`m not 100% on that, but I would swear cox did a production run in the `80`s with the black tanked, silver cased model.
A local shop had 1 for years in the showcase and nobody around here wanted to pay his 20% mark up when most shops were 10% ; so it sat year after year in his showcase lol
I didnt buy it back then because I couldn`t get a plane light enough to fly on a 020 so 010 was way out of the question for me back then

Re: TD .010 Black case
The colour changed in 1978 that is the pre Estes era I believe at that time the company was in the charge of Willian Selzer.
Re: TD .010 Black case
I'm going to start anther thread later about addresses and ages but meantime....
We know for certain that black and silver were being produced at East Warner
Avenue in 1990. I know it's not much but we have proof from the boxes they
Sent them out in that Cox were producing them a long time before Estes hove
Into view.
Btw any one any idea when date stamping started and finished, I haven't see dates
In Rincon Street boxes?

P.S.
Dan, I'd say a complete B+S is is well worth the 60
and makes more sense to hang on to.

TD .010
As I was looking this over and decided to keep it. Get some Cox fuel tubing and try it out. It feels very nice and should work fine. My friend bought some plugs for .010 at collecto new in package. Hope to get a couple from him.

Cool!
Hope it goes well for you and the plane you build lasts a very long time.
