Poll: Traveling Engine 3 engine selection .15 displacement

In my opinion I think you need to send the engine out with the conversion head rather than a glow head- So long as the engine runs fine it will be less stress for the operators and would increase the chances of more participants actually running/flying it.

Very hard to choose as they are all cool engines that I'm sure many on here have not had a chance to play with.

The medallion would probably have the most parts availability through parts engines, NOS and reproduction parts. Would also be less of a loss and easier to replace if it were to "walk off" or get lost in the mail. The Sportsman is a nice classic engine, not particularly rare so a parts unit could be sourced if need be. The Conquest would be a fun one, an all cast Cox engine, a pretty hot engine from what I hear. I do believe many parts from the later K&B can be used on it. Now what I think is the coolest and rarest engine of the bunch, the Special Mk II. This would probably gain the most attention. Except for the cylinder/piston and gold case, I believe the rest of the parts are interchangeable with that of the TD and Special .15.

I accidentally voted for the Conquest, I fat fingered it on my phone. I wanted to vote on the Medallion.

My reasoning is because more people would be apt to build a model and fly with it.

I believe there was an option to allow changed votes but that needed to be done right away when I set up the poll. Maybe Jacob can change it to correct the fat finger. I'm not voting. Whichever one wins is what's being sent.

The same can be said for the TD .15 Sp Mk II. The mounting pattern is the same as the Medallion. Just goes around the circle a bit faster.

What props would work best for the .15? I have Cox grey 8x4 and can put a MA 8x4 in also.

I think the group would find the Medallion and TD more familiar to operate since they are like their smaller siblings. I have some .15s(a Medallion, an early TD, and a MKII) that I've never fired up but intend to change that as well as build something appropriate to fly with them.

So in anticipation of the Medallion being chosen I spent some time today to freshen it up a bit. Total disassembly and clean in denatured alcohol. Polished the crankcase, back plate, collet, and the drive hub.

The cylinder had some tool marks. I can’t send it out like that. I took it to the lathe and buffed out the tooling marks on the fins. Got it down to bare metal on the outside and then reblued the cylinder. Looking good now.

Reassembled with a phenolic drive washer installed. Medallions never had these installed but to save the drive hub it was added. Liberal amount of oil applied. New glow head installed and now its ready for its journey.

Yes, it’s the same engine. Just new glow head.

Fantastic!  I got one of those in a box of Cox "junk" I picked up at a fly-in swap meet back in '07.  Never got around to running it.  I recently ordered a TD spinner, new carb body, and a new glow plug conversion head for it before sending it off to a guy for custom polishing/anodizing.  Here's the before/after shots. She's in great shape now.
