Sunoco Racing Fuel

Sunoco Racing Fuel
There's a Sunoco fuel station about a mile from where I live. It's actually not on a route that I travel very often.. and I don't fuel-up there. It has a small convenience-store like many stations.. and I stopped in a few days ago to buy something at the store. They're one of the few stations that sell "Sunoco Racing Fuel". Just for kicks.... I strolled over to the pump to check the price/octane-rating.
$9.99/gal. and 110 octane! Geez.. $160.00 to fill an avg. 16gal. tank. You have to wonder how much of it they sell?
That's the highest octane that I've ever seen at a pump. Rodders use to be able to buy 100LL at some of the local airfields.. but I don't think that it was/is 4x the price of Regular pump-gas.

Re: Sunoco Racing Fuel
Current price for 100LL at the local airport is $4.30 a gallon. Not too bad, really.

RE: Sunoco Racing Gas
Way before selling racing fuel by the gallon to dirt bike/ATV/street racers, and before the NASCAR Official Fuel, Sunoco had the 280 Concentrate that was almost unobtainable.
In the late 50's /early 60's,all Sunoco gas pumps had a large dial that the customer to dial to buy the right fuel blend for his car.
The dial started at 190 as I recall and went to 200,210,220,240, and 260. Each higher octane than the lower number.
The way it worked was that the base 190 blend had a larger % of 280 concentrate added for more octane and, of course, a higher price.
Our buddy's father owned City Taxi Service that was the biggest Sunoco dealer in the city. After his dad left for home on Friday and Saturday nights we would get together $4.00 to buy 10 gallons of 280 !!! $.40cents a Gallon !!!!
Since the statute of limitations is probably over now, I can tell you that stuff won many street races !!!!

RE: Sunoco Racing Gas
That's the pump that I referred to ......Great research Roddie !!!
We never knew or maybe I don't remember what the 260 blend octane level was, but the Premium 240 was at least 100 octane which was something every gas station sold anyway...
I always thought that the 280 concentrate was in the 115 octane area..
I do know that any Small Block or Big block Chevy with 11.5 to 1 compression and 36 to 42 degrees ignition advance timing would scream with the 280 fuel and never ever spark knock !!!
At the time normal 190 blend leaded was always about 26 to 28 cents per gallon sometimes during a "gas war" as low as 15 cents a gallon !!!
Those days are long gone !!!!!!!!!!

Re: Sunoco Racing Fuel
Yup.. no more "leaded-gasoline".. but hard-faced valve-seats takes care of that. I add lead-substitute to the fuel that I use in my old (1968) snow-thrower engine.. as well as ethanol-treatment. I seriously doubt that Sunoco's 110 octane racing-fuel has ethanol blended into it. At $10/gal.. I'd hope not!
