It ain't fair, I tell ya, it just ain't fair. Man, am I jealous --- it's like living at an airshow. The thing had more pipes than a pipe organ coming out of the cowl.
As far as the strobing, just tell folks it was a COX engine and started backwards.
Bwar...Har...Har !!! Yes! It's True! I'm one lucky yeahoo, and know it !!!
Though...in the interest of balance, perhaps I should post a video titled: "Kim vrs. The Toilet" !!!! lest my friends get a too glamor-skewed impression of my job!
Episodes like the the "Sea Fury" help make up for the times when the plumbing goes on strike and I, plunger in hand, have to suit up like Homer Simpson entering a reactor core !!!

Re: On the Ramp Right Now!
Leaning more toward the "Artsy" stuff. Took some photos of my buddy's Cessna 210 as he prepped for his run to Oshkosh this morning.
Even after all these years, I still find airports to have some mystical appeal, especially in the pre-dawn hours with a whole day of flying ahead. This time, it involved a little comedy as I watched my friend Phil try to get his father and a friend loaded into his airplane so that he could actually depart on time.
The term "Trying to Herd Cats" came to mind as his passengers decided to make last-second bathroom breaks, and then remembered absolutely essential stuff that had been left in the car, leaving Phil to mumble and pace around his plane.
The MOST important part was that I had the plane staged and ready to launch so that his 15-minute delay had nothing to do with ME !!!!

I went up there twice in the mid 90's, when I did WW2 living history. I'd love to take my boys up there one of these days.

For many years, Oshkosh was an un-compromisable summer destination. We flew in from the south using NORDO (no radio rules), and you REALLY felt like jumping out and kissing the ground once you shut down your engine out in the camping area!

Re: On the Ramp Right Now!
So, while staggering around my little concrete "porch" early Saturday morning, trying valiantly to reload my too-high-to-reach hummingbird feeder, I hear the unmistakable rumble of a couple of round engines...or possibly a VERY well coordinated gang of Harley's.
Confirmation of a flying dot in the super-thick haze east of the Skunk Works sent me running to get my binoculars, but the dot disappeared in the liquid air before I could glass him up.
Got on the phone to let my buddy D.J. know he had a rumbler heading in his direction, with a request that he call me once the Mystery Plane was parked on the ramp.
The return call resulted in some high-speed chucking of my camera pack into the Assault Van...and we were off!
Here's what we got:

Re: On the Ramp Right Now!
Fell in love with the Beech 18 at SMO, when I
lived in Santa Monica.
A former Air Force personel transport. The owner
(someone said it was Barrett Hilton) used a hand
held radio at the time. This was in the early 80's.
Nothing sounds like a twin radial.
Thanks for the pictures Kim.

Thanks Guys !
It's great to be associated with people who also love this stuff. It offsets the feeling of "Relicness" to have fellow admirers of these classics !!!!!

You're definitely not alone. I saw a Beech 18 a few weeks ago when I was in Sardinia. At the Olbia airport, there is one hanging from the ceiling in the departure hall. I didn't take a picture, but here's a small video of how it got there:

Well, you can't have a dynamic time on the job EVERYDAY ! Still, little Donatello here tried his best to liven things up...just before being relocated out back to the swamp !

Pictures of the Beech remind me of the "Sky King' seres on the RADIO (yes radio) except "Sky King", the Arizona rancher, flew a Cessna Twin IIRC.
Imagine listening to the radio and letting your imagination flow.

Turtles love flightlines. I am always pulling them off taxiways. Roaming FOD!
My daughter brought a Tiger Salamander into the house this morning. Must be one of those days.

Re: On the Ramp Right Now!
We have the same terms here ! "Mobile FOD" was the last call we heard concerning these guys! and the tower acknowledges: "Roger on the Mobile FOD...crew on the way..".
We DO have some monsters who don't get messed with: those dinosaur-looking snapping turtles that decide to go cross-country whenever we have a lot of rain. THEY are left to the maintenance crews to wrestle.
