Hey, my Dad had a Monza too. Not for long, as I recall. I hear-tell guys used to cram 327s in them, but I have no idea how.
These stories are great.

Re: Unsafe at Any Speed - A summer time project?
Bob , THAT AIN'T NO ENYA !! My first car was a corvair (red) non spider , But it came with the engine in the trunk Yes (( i was like 10 yrs. young )) I have no idea what my father and his Mechanic cousin were thinking ,, I was thinking Cool all i need to do is put the engine in the rear where it goes >>there . Long story short the engine did finally make it to the rear but did not run ,, starter problems for 1 thing No $$$ for 2 I was a Kid for 3 . It ended up in the woods and years later a junk man removed it for 25- at that time i think i came out ahead ( it had some serious cancer going on was removed in pieces) Good Luck with the New Project cause i know you can't resist .

Ha Eric, look at the picture above, you could of got $999.00 for it. What a laugh, the fellow is a dreamer especially with no engine.
One of the appeals is that turbo, I have never owned one or worked on one. It will be a learning experience if I get it.

I'm bumping along on this roddie, 50% of me says your an idiot for even thinking about it, the other 50 says it's a turbo learning experience for $300.
I talked to the owner who told me rabbits used it last year as a bunny nursery with a bunch of the little creatures running around it. Said it ran well when parked. I just wish that one of those 50 percentages would become 51 and get me out of this thing.
Gross. Hazmat suits and respirators required.

Well, it was made by humans, so it can be repaired by humans
It is quite a mess, baby bunny pee may have accelerated the deterioration. But 300 bucks is not a lot of money, you have a garage and you already commented the eBay wreck being "worse than yours"
One way might be to locate a base model car with a good shell to use as a donor and move the good bits of the Turbo into it. Or maybe look into one of these

You know.... (sorry I'm an instigator..) The Corvair-chassis was often used for custom dune-buggies. Find a Manx shell.. and have some fun with it!

my bad... but a cool vid.

Yea.. it's a 66 "Yenko-Stinger"... but you could easily see "spritely" performance from your prospective $300 candidate.. (which is claimed to run...) Jay comments on his changing the crankcase "breather" to a max-flow unit.. which I thought was notable.. along with running about half the recommended tire-pressure in the front, for better handling/road-feel. Brakes on the Stinger are still 4-whl. drum.. with a dual master cylinder upgrade.. but no booster.
Swapping the generator to an alternator seems to be par for the course, to increase reliability. The flywheel can be fitted with a magnetic trigger and sensing-unit, which basically does away with a mechanical distributor.
The Corvair isn't your "run of the mill" sports car. I can definitely see you buying this car.. with the same passion that you've exhibited with other sports-cars.. and the Enya model-engines that you've amassed. If you buy the car.. and it turns-out to be more than you bargained-for.. you'll likely make your money back +... if you decide to unload-it.

Re: Unsafe at Any Speed - A summer time project?
I wrote my Father concerning your find Bob. Here is what he had to say about it:
He would be crazy not to take it! These are great cars. As long as there is no major body rot. Easy to work on. Easy to boost horsepower. Being a 1963, it would be 150 h.p. which can be increased to 170-180 just with water injection.
My 1966 Corsa turbo 4 speed had 180 h.p. stock. With a set of nice wheels and a set of F60-14 black wall tires it was as good looking as it was fast. Another one I wish I still had.

Re: Unsafe at Any Speed - A summer time project?
IF you can store it for at least a year without added cost. I would bet you can sell it for at least $1000 if you decide to change your mind on the project.
You can scrap it for the steel and probably get $300 (*AND I CRINGE AT THE THOUGHT OF THIS!*)
There you go, if those two points are not worth 1% I don't think you can be convinced.

Yup, I joined a couple of Corvair forums and I guess Clark's is the hot lick when it comes to Corvairs. But, I tell you those forums are just dull, dull, dull when compared to the CEF. The MGE (MG Experience) forum is a different matter, those guys and gals are involved but still don't quite measure up to what's going on here.

Re: Unsafe at Any Speed - A summer time project?
I owned one of these around 1972, it had nice lines and a drop top. So long ago I can't remember the exact year, paid like 50 bucks.
The wheels were factory rally rims, like a shrink down corvette wheel, very cool. Lime green body with large racing strips like in one of the other photos
Black buckets inside and a black top. Power train nothing fancy, two speed auto. It was in very good condition with low miles.
One of the best cars I've owned, handled like a dream, I dogged it mercilessly for a few years than gave it away.
Most cars from that era handled like a boat, now this, you could really power through a corner.
Really wish I had that one back!!
