Cox Engine of The Month
And My Turn for a Swap Meet Haul---'The Bucket o' Planes'!

And My Turn for a Swap Meet Haul---'The Bucket o' Planes'!
Walked into the backside of the mall, and was greeted with this sight: Two Goldberg Shoestrings with Fox engines, and two Sig Busters---seriously set up for racing with a Rossi and Fox---unceremoniously dumped in a plastic tub.
The guy had rented tables for entire length of the wall...an estate sale...and when I finally caught him he said 50 bucks for the lot, but not including the tub! Well, a few moments later, the orphans were safely parked in my van.
I'll have some better photos once I'm home and properly thawed out.
Another table had ten beautifully built free flight rubber-powered model, causing me to remember Billy talking about acquiring such planes, so a quick phone call had him connected with the planes' seller.
So, a hundred bucks later, I was loading ten more models into my rapidly crowding van. Billy was thrilled to have them, and I got my hundred bucks back, so happy times all around!
I was getting ready to bail when the guy with the estate sale got up on a chair and started an impromptu auction...saying he didn't want to take any planes home. He started the bidding at 10 bucks, and caused a stir when guys saw big classics with 4-stroke engines going for 35-40 bucks. I had to walk out, not about to adopt anymore hangar queens regardless of the price, and I've never been any good at re-selling stuff. So, some modelers got themselves some REAL bargains to take home.
No Cox engines to be found, though there were several cute little diesels
Tired and cranky now, and still an hour out from home so, later dudes!

Most of the Goldberg planes at our swaps are extinct. The Jersey crowd has typically snatched up all the Foxberg planes. It's nice to see useable examples. My Shoestring bit the dust two years ago when the control horn broke on a fast pitstop racing. I refueled and launched, it went up at a 45 deg angle and stayed up for several laps but it came down the same way it went up. I managed to re kit the plane and totally shatter the bushing in the crankcase. It was somewhat heartbreaking as my Shoestring was built by a WWII British Spitfire pilot. He would've been happy it went out in a blaze of glory. The Shoestring is a good flying plane. Good luck bringing them back. Ken

Nice haul Kim, but I couldn't have walked away from that V twin on the orange and blue plane if it was reasonably priced.
"no good at reselling stuff" yes, I know first hand that's true being the benefactor of one of your finds.
Thanks again - Bob

Thanks guys! I had to shame myself out of the place...got so many projects looking at me in my shop now that it's overwhelming. It's also sobering to know I've turned that corner of accumulating stuff to seriously needing to finish what I've got.
The Shoestrings will be on-line shortly...have a brother showing an interest in doing some C/L flying, so I'm gonna call his bluff. Photos to follow if that happens!
Speaking of that pack of storage locker models, I may just haul them to the S.M.A.L.L Fly-In this year to try to adopt them out...figure they got the best chance there of anywhere.

Yeah, no prob. Probably my favorite Goldberg. I watched Joe Gilbert fly one on a warm, quiet evening in Oklahoma. It was beautiful as it cut across the setting sun. I never thought a Shoestring was anything more than a fun flyer before that, watching Joe fly it like it was a full on PA stunter changed my mind. I have a new one in a box that I really should build. I flew Rusty's a while back and it's a good little plane. Have fun Kim!

What a haul! @ "the bucket is not included"
I find it amazing that stuff like this still pops on the surface, these things must have been hibernating for years. Sad thing of course that it was another estate sale, nobody in the family interested in the stuff apparently. Hopefully all the other planes and things found a good home too.
