Re: Got Me A New Knee
Glad to hear all went well and you will be back. I know the hows and such of the operation as my mother had both done a fair while ago. She was night and day different ever since, and was good for her. The recovery was a while, but again, well worth it. Anyways, thanks again for posting and wishing you a sBEEdy recovery!

I've also had it done and now the most important thing you can do is Physical Therapy and lots of it! Good Luck!

Good luck, Gardner. Glad you're on the mend. They are getting really good with joint replacements these days, and I look forward to seeing you getting back into the game.
Take care. Do everything the Doc and PT techs tell you.

At my age I have quite a large set of family and acquaintances with replacement knees, hips, and ankles
Two recurring themes for the ones who were worse off AFTER the replacement:
1; Refusal to put in the time and pain of prescribed Physical therapy
2; Excessive weight gain and or refusal to significantly reduce weight...
------in fact several of the family members had to reduce excess weight just to get the surgery done, were told point blank to keep losing weight down to a range the doc's desired... one such patient was an uncle who immediately put all the pre surgical weight back on and YOU know the result...
I have no idea if you are portly or not...BUT I do know the Physical therapy and weight loss are important to make the new mechanical knee work pain free for decades
All that said I am glad you got a new knee and pray it does exactly what you went through that for...
BTW if turning circles and trying to get dizzy are in the future with your rebuilt leg... during the physical therapy do some exercises that simulate "walking the circle"....wink

Re: Got Me A New Knee
+1 on the well wishes and also on the physical therapy / excercise at home thing.
My mom had her knee done a couple of years ago, she is doing well, but she did do all the excercises and then some. She's a physiotherapist herself, so she knew the importance

I have seen knee replacement do wonderful things. DO YOUR THERAPY, and more importantly, the extra self-motivated therapy.
Best of luck all around!

Re: Got Me A New Knee
Even after reading all the other comments I feel obliged to stress the necessity for prolonged physio, I too have seen the benefits of this in colleagues and family - I have also seen what happens when it is ignored!
The success of the operation now largely depends on you.
All that aside, I am pleased for you that the operations has gone well and hope you notice a big difference in mobility.

Knee Replacement Book Report
Before I get started on my 2 month journey I want to thank everone for their comments advice and well wishes. Im going to start at the beginning (35 years ago ). If I would have listened to the older and wiser Aircraft Mechanics I problably wouldn't be writting this now.I'd be on my knees changing tires or pumps or whatever when an older guy would stop and say " Hey man, go put on some knee pads" My reply was " I don't them damn things" ( Turns out , I did need them). I started out this way in hopes to maybe prevent a younger guy or gal here to go through what I'm about to go through. Monday...Arrived at hosptial at 6:30 .The operation started at 8:00. Iwas awake during most of it and could hear them grinding out my bones with a plunge router and then slaming the new pieces in whit a 3 pound sledge hammer.( I'm not kidding) Tuesday... Pretty much just laid there all day, I couln't feel anything due to the nerve block they had given me. Wednesday... The fun begins Poked and prodded all day. Traind on different PT techniques. Very week due to loss of blood during operation and loads of Meds. Discharged by the Doctor . ( My new best Friend)
Thursday... I have been in bed all day with my knee in this machine that takes it from 0 degrees to 110 degrees of motion several hundred times. Ok , real PT starts tomorrow. Hope this wasn't too Graphic...... Stay tuned for more fun

Re: Got Me A New Knee
Sounds like Medical SOP. Cut, wack, stitch and wrap! I watched a video of a total knee replacement before my mother went under the knife/saw. Was not fun to watch or hear, but it sure put a spring back into her step. She had the other side done a year later, and enjoyed another decade of walking in retirement. Here's wishing you a full recovery !

RE: Got me a new knee
I had both my knees totally replaced, one in 2011 and the other in 2014. I swore I'd never get the second replaced until it gave way later. Hope you have an easier time than I since it took me a number of months on each one to get mobile without really tough pain.
Physical therapy is the real key to a full recovery and I had at least 25 PT sessions after each surgery. The first 4 or 5 were real religious experiences I must say.
All in all it was the best thing I should done much earlier. I would have avoided years of chronic pain.
All that is over now and my life is so much the better.....
All the best to you bro.......Know what you're going thru but it will get much better......I promise......

Re: Got Me A New Knee
Yes, pretty graphic AKJ, I felt your pain.
I'm lucky, my knees are great, but years ago I fell off a ladder catching my ankle between the rungs on the way down snapping it in half. Got 3 plates and 13 screws holding it together. Smarts every now and then.
Doc had to take bone from my hip to repair it. I woke up while he was doing it and told him that my hip hurt. Put him under he said and I drifted off again.

Knee report
It's been two weeks since I got my Knee replaced.....The pain has not been too bad ,,Just constant,,I have been surprised by how little energy I have, Just started getting my strength back yesterday.,,,The Doc took the bandages off today. Had very little scaring due to the use of super glue . I asked if he had to use a kicker. He just looked at me like Huh? Been hitting PT super hard and am very happy with my results so far.....at this point the only thing I would say is if you have to get this done, I would highly recommend just doing ONE AT A TIME.

Re: Got Me A New Knee
Joe.. I give you a lot of credit man. Some people won't have orthopedic-surgery done to improve their mobility. I have chronic back-pain. My wife wants me to try a Tens-unit. (SP?) I have a feeling that Santa might leave one on the hearth before he goes up the chimney.
RE: Got me a new knee
Great news and good progress...Keep the PT up one day at time and you will be rewarded......Steve
