Can't Remember Her Name...
I just picked this plane up from a REALLY Nice fellow. He's retired and now "downsizing" to a Condominium. He's not sure just how well the Condo Association gonna accept him when he whizzes off the back deck or shoots off a few rounds of his 9 MM into the woods, like he can now. He has a "Ian" type work shop, but on American Steroids. A Garage 4 Stall Wide, 2 Stall Deep, at least 20ft tall. Iron Beam "Crane Rail" the length of one stall, so he could lift his boat up off the trailer, and work on either the boat or trailer. 2 Lathes, drill press, disc sander, belt sander, Bearing Press, A couple things i did not recognize. Hand Tools on the wall (Like Bob's) like it was set up by a surgeon. He has the place is set-up for his "Pre-Estate" sale, everything set out on tables that he has to "git-rid-of" I was the lucky one who responded to the Add he posted on CraigsList offering his model airplane Engines up for sale. He said he'd had one other caller who wanted just the "cox" engines, but wanted the whole lot to go to someone who'd appreciate them, that was Me!! When I arrived at his house in the woods, He came out of the house saying He'd found one more engine, only problem was it was still attached to the plane!! When we entered the garage, here was this blue beauty sitting on a table. "I can't remember her name, " he says " my father and I built it together awhile back, while we were still flying at the Old Airport" (that would have been in the 60's.) He was into Combat and a couple of the Super Tigre engines had been put away with the dirt from the final crash still embedded in the fins. He could't remember the name of the plane(s) he used for combat..seemed to think it was a knife name, Blade or Stiletto, or Razor or somethin' , I told him i'd built a Rilley Wooten VooDoo, yeah , they were like that, but quick and easy to build cause we always crashed 'em in combat. This Blue one was just to nice to Crash,,again. Seems that on the Maiden flight, as he picked up the handle one of the wire strands got caught in the grass, and as the plane took off it just went up and back over, crashed right in front of him...nothin' I could do! So, his dad rebuilt it and he hung on to it all these years, cause he didn't want to crash it again.
Just Wondering if any of you recognize or know the name of the model:

Veco Thunderbird. Bob Palmer design.
You are one lucky dude. They fly amazingly, I have a wing off of one on my bench right now.

Thank-you Ron! I'll sleep better tonight knowing the name of the plane. Its just such a cool plane to look at. I can understand why he hung onto it all the these years!

There are a few variations of the design. Yours look to be a Thunderbird II. If so the wingspan would be 56"
There are plans available on Outerzone for free.

Wow, great day! Sounds like the garage I always wanted but will never have. Too bad he has to leave it, nothing like whizzing and shooting off your back porch.

Those were my exact thoughts as I drove away. Man, he's gotta give it all up after getting it all together, after working all those years. Makes me want to double down and enjoy what I have, while I'm still able to enjoy it!!

Re: Can't Remember Her Name...
Dang, I hope the old fellow won't regret the downsizing thing too much. Some people just need a workshop, and if you have had one, it's hard to live without one.
Anyway, that Thunderbird is a Classic. A 16-year old fellow named Juhani Kari won the Finnish Championship with one, and finished second in the World Championships the same year in Hungary. Mr Kari dominated the Finnish pattern competitions in the early-to-mid 60s. Attached are a couple of photos of him and his Thunderbird.

Old hunters cabin located on my property overlooking a pond. My grandson and I have shot old parlor rifles (Floberts and Zimmerstutzens) from it but as far as I know no one has wizzed off it. There is a pool table and Christmas lights in there, gets rather festive this time of the year when family arrives.
