Cox Engine of The Month
Went to the field today

Went to the field today
I went to the flying field today. It was the first time in over three years. It was pretty windy so I had the place to myself. I brought a GWS DC-3, a Sig Hummer, A Select Hobbies DNU and a Cox Mantis. The DC-3 is so under powered that I think I am going to retire it. When starting the Hummer I lost the prop screw and spinner. That sucked since this plane is my old reliable. I changed engines on the DNU from a pressurized reedie to a non-pressurized medallion. The engine went rich and performed badly between one and two minutes into the flight. I think I will put a pressurized tee dee on it. The Mantis was the shining star. The throttled medallion didn't throttle worth a darn but it ran well at full throttle and the plane flew well.
So, maybe not the day in aviation paradise that I had longed for but, it was still incredibly fun. I hope to get out again, soon.

Yeah, prop nuts lost in the grass, funky engine runs, field engine swaps... sounds like a typical day at the field. Glad you finally got some stick time, good going. All of our RC guys are afraid of the wind too. Suits me, like you said, you got the whole place to yourself. Hope you get some more.

Re: Went to the field today
Thanks guys! I have already put a pressurized tee dee on the DNU and new parts on the Hummer. I ran the Hummer through a couple tanks of gas and the engine is running like a scalded ape. It is a stock Norvel Big Mig .061 and it turns a Cox yellow 5x3 safety tip 22,000RPM. That should give the Hummer pretty good performance. I think the tee dee will do the same for the DNU. I hope to run it tomorrow.

Re: Went to the field today
Big Mig with 6x3 at 22k is NOT fast...that engine will turn a glass 4.25 x 3 or 4 at near 30K on SIG 25%
Bounce it to 40% AND SLAP ON a 4.5x 5 and prepare to think about 52 foot lines....grin...OH yea and possibly a new plug or two

Re: Went to the field today
Sorry guys, that was a typo. It is only a 5x3. I wish it was a 6x3. The yellow safety tip prop is a very high load, though. The prop I like to use is an APT 5.7x3 that I cut down to 5x3. That is usually good for some extra RPM.

Rusty I must respectfully object ...nowadays, once I find the headwind direction for a take-off and landing, no wind can bother me, especially with my very light, 020 and 049 size R/C planes...You may be right with the 40 size, 1,6m span planes that I also do not fly when the wind is hectic.
I smashed (down deep on my learning curve) more R/C planes because of fuel supply problems than because of wind (you hand launch the sucker and the engine gets some air bubbles, slows but does not stop, the plane stalls, and then the engine suddenly revives and pulls the plane right smack into the ground...these were the damnest moments of experimenting with fuel tanks and untight fuel lines...I am not proud of any of these experiences) .

Re: Went to the field today
What do you mean, Andras? When me and my CL contingent are flying, the RC guys, except for President Jim who can fly well in any weather, just sit on the bleachers hoping the wind will die. We have a 200' wide runway that half of them can barely hit on a calm day... "hit" meaning the primary definition of the operative term Lol.balogh wrote:RknRusty wrote:............ I am not boasting here and do not consider myself an aerobatics genius, but I fly my 020 and 049 powered R/C planes sometimes in so strong wind that when the plane hits head wind it simply floats in one position! Windy weather flying may be easier with an R/C than with a C/L that hits periodivcally head and tailwinds every 180 degree.
One thing is sure, in windy weather I still keep flying when others with their larger R/C planes and sail planes are already packing up their stuff and call it a day.

Re: Went to the field today
I ran the engine on the DNU this afternoon. It is a tee dee .051 with a few mods. It turned the Cox yellow safety tip 5x3 21,800 RPM and was just as steady as can be. I love running crank case pressure.

Is your pressure connection on the throttle body or in the back lid of the crankcase?

Re: Went to the field today
Hoping to go again tomorrow. If so, I will take an .061 Big Mig powered Sig Hummer, an .051 Tee Dee powered DNU, a .90 powered Harrier, and hopefully, a Valentine Speed Bee powered Ace Simple Series T-6 Texan. It all depends on Mother Nature.
All four are ready to go!

Re: Went to the field today
Mother Nature was not being gentle today
But, I still had beautiful blue skies and lots of sun shine
[/ur
The DNU awaiting another opportunity to pierce the wild blue with a vengeance

The Hummer waiting its turn to show what it can do
I made it out to the field again today. It was really windy so I had the field all to myself. It was too windy to fly the .90 size Harrier so I stuck with the little ones. I decided to maiden the T-6 first. It was a disaster. I had the engine screaming beautifully when it just suddenly stopped. Something inside the engine is broken, again. This plane will be getting a new engine! There was still hope! I flew the DNU with the pressurized Tee Dee .051. That plane is an absolute screaming rock star with that engine. I also flew the Hummer several times. Both planes flew wonderfully and were a total blast.

The Texan with the dud engine is going to get an MP Jet .061 PB venture engine.
Unless I change my mind and stick a BB engine in it.

Both good looking planes. I really like the micro T-6. Cowls look good, but it sure is easier to leave them behind to go fly.

That is the Cox 5x3 safety tip. It just looks green in the pic. It is really yellow. It is a very high load , soft, easily deformed prop. But, it is very durable and saves me from a lot of broken props from our rough field.
