2015 SouthEast Stunt N Fun
This past Halloween weekend not only featured ghosts and goblins .... it was also the SouthEast Stunt N Fun's Control Line Precision Aerobatics Championships.
Since getting back into flying less than a year ago, one of my goals was to have fun and not get all wrapped up in competing. Since my local area only has one contest per year, I decided to go and support the MCRC club ... and maybe enter an event.
I ended up going both days .... and had a terrific time. Beautiful flying field and facilities, and the members and volunteers did a superb job. This was alot of work for them ....well done!
Saturday I entered Old Time Stunt with my SuperClown/OS25-LA. Conditions were favorable, but my scores weren't. It's a direct result of constant flying by myself and misinterpreting the manuever diagrams. My entrances/exits to a bunch of manuevers were wrong. Of course, having flaps also reduced my scores. I learned alot on hows its done from watching all the other fliers. Also on this day were Nostalgia30 and Fun Scale. I should have brought my P-40 for the fun scale .... oh well.
I wasn't going to go on Sunday ..... but saturday evening I got to talking with fellow CEF member Jim Carter. He said that he and club president Larry Helphinstine were going to make the trip over for Beginner Stunt.
How could I say no ...... !!!
After registration was over .... planes weighed and lines pull tested .... there were 6 entries in Beginner. Yay! Thats the makings of a gang ....
The winds were really squirrely and made some flights exceptionally interesting. There were a couple crashes too ...........
It took a couple practice flights to figure out my fuel load .... I leaned the Evo36 on my 38Special quite abit to compensate for the wind .... and the fact I was going to be flying overhead 8's for the first time with this plane. I was going to need all the speed/power I could get.
After the round .... did the overhead really look like an 8? Not to me it didn't ... looked more like a deformed pretzel. However, I made the attempt .... got a few points ... and the bonus points for the pattern.
Round 2 was much the same as round 1 for me .... but I was disappointed in my landing. The wind pushed the plane right down and bounced once ... recovered for a quarter lap glide and then landed smoothly. There are other points I could pick on ... but landings i always do pretty well ..... except this time. It irritated me that I did that .......
Jim Carter got the biggest cheer .... he was very animated out there in the circle while flying his second round. He made it through the pattern and was very keyed up. Good for you! LOL!!
At the awards, Jim was gifted with a bottle of ZAP glue to keep in his flight box .... they felt he was going to need it .... LOLOLOL!!!
Also, congrats to Larry Helphinstine .... nicely done to pull out a podium in the second round.
Sorry .... I didn't take many pictures this weekend, but I do have the scoreboards and a few others.
-------------------
This is a picture of a picture .... eventually I'll be emailed the digital prints, but I don't know how long that will take.
------------------
.... and the Beginner scoreboard
===========================
After the EXPERT competition is over ... the top 3 expert fliers have a one flight take all for this trophy. They get to keep it, and its traveling box for one year. Congrats to Gene Marteen!!
---------------------------------
Here are the rest of the scoreboards .... starting with Old Time Stunt. I really need to find a plane (my Vampire??) that doesn't have flaps. I'm throwing points away.

Looks like a FUN time to me Larry , Maybe you can get with some of the guys that are flying some gooder patterns and get In the action . Heck you have a circle now ! Glad you got in there you do fly very well and no need for it to go to waste unless you don't want the pressure ? I know it would put some on me if I were in that league. Eric

L.O.L.!! Hey y'all! Yeah it was a wonderful event. Great summary Larry! I believe all the pilots had a great time because the conditions really were very nice. Oh there were some moments where the "breezes" may have caught a pilot of two off guard but all in all I don't think anyone would complain about the weather in general. The host club, MCRC really did a great job of grooming the field along with making everyone feel "at home" by providing a really savory breakfast and lunch. I'll leave describing the skills of the various competitors to someone more knowledgeable than me because in my eyes, I was really impressed with the level of abilities I observed throughout the day. In truth, I felt like I was the only one who needed to be "thrown back in the oven" for being underdone; because these guys were really good in every category. Thankfully, at the end of the day, my skills were pleasantly and wonderfully recognized and honored .... I was awarded a brand new tube of superglue!! Guess the management recognized the ever increasing promise in my rebuilding skills!! Someday ..... I look forward to my being moved up to the next level as well, .... once I figure out how to keep from scarin' er'body when I fly !!

Hey .... it was Halloween ... your supposed to scare everbody. LOL!
Seriously though .... your sense of humor is infectous, and I for one enjoy being around you. You didn't hear the other guys I was sitting with, but when you were completing your second round you had everyone laughing at your on circle antics. I don't think they've ever seen someone talk to their plane whilest doing manuevers. LOL!
The only time you did scare me .... was the 10 minutes after your crash. You were fit to be tied ... LOL!
Look forward to flying with you again ...

Its really me that puts the pressure on ..... and I've been reluctant to make my second time around anything other than fun with this control line thing. I printed off a copy of the additional manuevers so I'll have them with me at the field .... and I'll start learning at my own pace, with a kinda-sorta disposable plane.
But, it will be a slow process .... theres too many things I want to do. I like 1/2A .... I like my throttled planes. I've got a 46-size Hangar9 P-51 R/C plane that I want to convert to control line ..... and another plane half built ... and do something about my Vampire so I can fly in Old Time Stunt (which I really like) without taking the flap penalty that kills my score.
I'm not retired, so that list could keep me busy for months. But I'll work on the new maneuvers someplace ...

Well look what you fell into Lol. That's pretty cool, and good work, congratulations.
I see lots pilots on those sore boards that come to Huntersville. That's a really good turnout for Beginner. Florida seems like a good place for control line enthusiasts.
As far as pressure goes, I've begun to learn something about it this Fall. I think I'll err, so to speak, on the side of fun from now on. As I quoted in your Jumpin' Bean thread at Stunthangar,

I found my seriousness limit this Fall when I started pushing myself too hard, and it hurt my level of fun in practice, hurt my game and my fleet. My new perspective is already in mind for next season, more fun, less frustration.

And I'd like to add what Mark Boesen told me after I finally jumped in and tried a contest. I came in 3rd my first time.
Now you can always say, "I flew competitive Control Line Precision Aerobatics." No one can take that away, and I think it's a pretty damn cool thing to have at least tried.

Re: 2015 SouthEast Stunt N Fun
Hey Rusty --- Ya, keeping the fun in it is going to be important to me. I did see your post at SH. I'll certainly try to improve ... theres no question .... but its how I go about it that will be different this time around.
Yes, there were some good fliers there .... amazing to watch them. And I was pretty happy with all the Beginners. I wasn't even going to go sunday until Jim said he was making the long trip. Then 2 other guys who have never competed before also joined in ..... we really had a blast all day long. I didn't feel any pressure at all ... it was just fun!
They had an event called Fun Scale ... In hindsight I wished I had brought my P-40. It wasn't as 'critical' as most scale events, and the few that entered had a real good time. At the awards, it was asked of the pilots if any were more interested in it, after seeing it. Alot of hands went up. Yeah, I could use my P-40 .... but now I'm looking at my garage wall where a Hangar9 RC P-51 is hanging unused. All it needs is a bellcrank system ... and I'll buy a cheap 6-channel 2.4Ghz ..... I think it would be amazing ....
Back to the fun out it ..... I gots a Lil Jumpin Bean that needs to be flown ....... ----->>>>>>

That's a great picture, looks like a genuine fun-induced smile. And there's Gene peeking over y'all's shoulder Lol.
You GO, Guy!
After my lessons of October, I truly believe focusing on having fun will get me more satisfactory results in competition than getting serious and pushing myself. I'm hard headed, I had to learn the hard way.

Ah, the dubious Glue Award Lol. We should do that in Huntersville. I don't know Jim Carter by name. I guess he knows who I am though. Congratulations, Jim. If you hadn't tried, you wouldn't have won anything!
Matt! Second place to a Gray-Hair! Hey, good for the grays, we're hanging in there.
Larry, as far as smiling, I'm the same way in photos. It wasn't until the last few years playing with airplanes that I could smile in a photo. I don't know why, just not something I can produce on demand. My future relatives will probably be looking at pictures and say, Man, that old Uncle Rusty, he must've really been a dick. Lately my talent for photo smiling has begun to cross over though..

Matt had some issues on his flyoff run ... on his first attempt, on takeoff the plane nosed over just a tad and clipped the prop ... which stalled it. On his 2nd and final attempt .... he couldn't get the engine started. He finally did and put up a nice flight ... but he over ran the time ..... 8m40s. Gene and Matt tried so hard to get that engine running ..... it took a long time. It sucked .....
