Cox Engine of The Month
I bought a Cox Stuka today!

I bought a Cox Stuka today!
Well, kinda. I stopped by the local hobby shop today to get a prop, and as I was checking out I asked the owner if he had any Cox stuff on consignment. He said, “On consignment? No.” But he led me over to the engine display case and pointed to a NIB Medallion .09 in a Jewel case. It had a $59.00 price sticker on it. I declined, as I have four Medallion .09’s already, three of which are throttled, and $60 is too much. I got the most recent last week, new with throttle ring but missing the needle valve for only $26.00 shipped off of eBay. He said, “Wait a minute,” and went into the back. He came out a couple of minutes later and handed me this saying, “15 bucks.”:
As you can guess, the engine was all gummed up and seized. The previous owner had superglued the fuselage together, so I can’t just unscrew it and save the major portion of the fuselage. I told him $15 was too much, but I’d go $10. I figure the engine, prop spinner, and whatever kind of metal tank the PO glued in it would be worth that once I get them cleaned up. He took two fives, and I took it home. Now to figure out how to get then engine and tank out without making a big mess. It looks like I’ll have to take a saw and saw off the nose to get everything out, since the sides of the fuse are glued together.
Usable parts I might have left over are:
Maybe the stab struts
The red cockpit assembly
The red exhaust stack and radiator pieces
Maybe a couple of canopy pieces after I get it apart.
If anyone wants them, let me know. I’ll find an envelope big enough and send the pieces your way.

Re: I bought a Cox Stuka today!
It is just stupid, silly stuff like this that makes me spend 5 times what I would have to if I picked it up completed.
It would drive me nuts till I had all of the parts to rebuild it to flyable.

If its just CA, batjac, you might be able to remove all screws from the fuselage. Then take a model knife or sharp utility and carefully work the seams until it pops loose. If a solvent glue like PVC or ABS plastic glue was used, then this might be more difficult as the solvent has fused the pieces together. With some careful prying, you might be able to salvage it.

They make CA debonder. It's usually on the shelf with the CA. Just put it on let it sitt a while and it turns the CA into a gummy paste that wipes off. I've used it several times and it works well enough.
Surprised nobody mentioned it yet, maybe I am the only one who makes mistakes.

Cribbs has a good point. As he said put it on the joint, let it sit and you should be able to separate the wing from the fuselage.Cribbs74 wrote:They make CA debonder. Now if it's something like Testors plastic cement then you'll have fun getting it apart. (Bandit)

I agree with the de-bonder, creak and crack it open down the production seams. If you are going to use a saw, use a razor saw down the production seams once the other, less destructive processes have been tried. I 've used all three and I think you'll find it isn't too tough. Then you'll have a flyable airplane out of the parts you have. Old Testors plastic glue will repair that wing, get some styrene stock about 1/16th thick and use it for a doubler about an inch wide, it'll melt the plastic parts right to one another.

Re: I bought a Cox Stuka today!
I'd test the de-bonder as it might attack the plastic. If you're not too worried about the plastic, remove the screws and using a knife, slip it into the seam and twist, should crack right open.
You could cut the plane in two and mount it on a wall/wood as a profile.
The engine is probably a nice 290 product motor(dual port), elevator and misc. cockpit parts look good.
I also had a basket case like that and after some searching found a "donor basket case" to restore it with.

My Stuka, circa 1974? Picture from today...
Still flying! In the storage box when I retrieved it recently from 40 years of storage, I was pleasantly surprised to find, in addition to the original parts, a new canopy set, new sticker set (not installed yet), 3 new props, new nose cone, glow plug, hex drive plate-spring and starter. I've also got the original bomb. I'm sure glad I had the foresight as a youth to order those extra parts! Started right up after I ordered the right fuel.
Note the external tank. The nipples broke right off the old tank when trying to connect with fuel line, of course. Found one on eBay, $22. NOt sure of the age of that tank, I passed.
