Re: I won it, now what is it?
-----"Well cool Bob! I have that mount in my toolbox and I had no idea what it was for. Now I do Thanks!"-----
Glad to help Ron.
That backplate with the fine thread valve assembly beats the pants outta the standard production ones.
If you gently press the valve body out, you can drill the opening out a little too.(got to lose the screen)
I wish there were mounts for all the postage stamp plates out there.
Bob
I digress:-0
The bolt/screw pattern on the adapter mount is same as on the Bee backplates---sweeeet!

Carl Goldberg used to market a baloon bladder tank set-up complete with
a retro-fit mount for the postage stamp backplate.
Those old backplates also feature a 128tpi needle valve assembly.
Bob
sweet!
those are cool!

Finding out who actually made them for Carl Goldberg could be a lead.nitroairplane wrote:microflitedude wrote:That's interesting - never seen one before.

The mold is probably sitting on the back of a shelf somewhere.
Maybe with a little aluminum, and some bending and drilling..........hmm.

Yeah, neat mount. Looks simple to make. I could probably make one with a vice and a dremel.
My engine arrived, the only thing missing was the reed. It does have a 2 postion throttle as mentioned earlier. I may be able to modify it to allow it to function as a fully adjustable throttle. I also went ahead and used my Carl Goldberg mount and sure enough it fit perfectly to that back plate. I almost tossed that thing out as I had no use for it and had no clue what it was. Thanks to Bob I have a use for it now.

Well, it runs, like a turd.....but it runs. Compression is not so hot. I have yet to figure out the throttle. Doesn't seem to make a difference no matter where I put it.

Sounds like you cylinder is shot. Loss of compression, and the outer area could be worn, allowing too much exhaust to escape around the throttle ring.
Or the throttle ring could be the culprit along with the piston and/or the glowhead.

or maybe its you fuel

I do not think fuel would prevent the throttle action or take away compression.
Re: I won it, now what is it?
You know, the compression came right back after it cooled down. If I flip the prop through the compression stroke it swings around and smacks my finger. The throttle sleeve is a loose fit like you mentioned. Not sure if that is normal for compression.
The fuel is questionable Nitro as it was my old stuff with a little new mixed in. I ran your .020 with the same stuff and it screamed for 20 minutes or so.

That means it is worn and when it gets hot the cylinder expands and loses compression and when it cools down it is fin.
You will need a new piston and cylinder.

Re: I won it, now what is it?
Well guys,
I took a second look and I do have some "fizzing" around the piston when I slowly cycle it through per Mud's suggestion so I suppose the piston is a little worn. I think the real reason it ran so crappy is because of excessive drag on the prop from the spring starter, so much so that it wore deep grooves into the blades. Nearly wore clean through them. I guess the spring starter is not supposed to touch the prop while running......stupid, stupid, stupid. Could have lost an eye! Lesson learned there. I readjusted the tang so it clears the "new" prop. I will try it again and post back. Most of my engines are tee dee's with no spring starters. My pee wee's have them and they clear the props easily in the resting position. Never even questioned why it was rubbing on this .049.

Got it running, it's no screamer prob due to the compression but, it runs reasonably well. The spring starter was the main culprit as it was causing excessive drag. I will post a pic of the prop damage when I have time.
