Lithium battery in GPS explodes

Lithium battery in GPS explodes
I got an email forwarded to me from a friend, showing photos of what apparently can happen if the Lithium battery in a GPS unit overheats. It's claimed that it's from being left attached to the dashboard/windshield in the hot sun... although I suspect other factors may have been responsible. Just the same; these photos will make you think twice about leaving a Lithium battery-powered device (GPS, phone, tablet etc.) charging in your vehicle while unattended.

false.
It is a good warning about electronics safety. Unplug your devices, as the cause is believed to be a charging dock for an iphone.

Good site that Snopes. I will never forward an email like this without checking first. 9 times out of 10 it can't be varified. I do wonder if these rumours are started by market competiors.

Re: Lithium battery in GPS explodes
The first year I owned our Smart car, a lot of people forwarded me horror stories and photos of crunched micro cars. Many of them were photo shopped and fake.
Something obviously caused the in cabin fire photos you posted...AND I have seen many types of batteries cook off and catch fire or explode including 12v lead acid starting batteries and NiCad 24v Military starting batteries. Some of the current technology is fairly safe BUT: The newer types of battery formulations and packaging are in their infancy and many need to be treated with more respect and caution.
On a side note....As a HAM radio operator I can find no rational reason FAA or Airlines restricted cell phone or other electronic devices on aircraft....
Ponder this as you come up with ideas why: This country is covered every where with TV, AM, FM, broadcast stations that emit tens of thousands of RF (radio frequency) wattage UP as well as OUT to the listeners. The Cell towers generally provides coverage OUT 15 miles and the RF is also UP about 10 miles describing a upside down bowl. Every airplane is always flying inside these RF bubbles of energy every minuet they are in the air.

Yes, I've often marveled at the fact that we live in such a thick electromagnetic soup. every molecule of everybody and everything rattling to some resonant wave and being bombarded endlessly by the dancing field effect. Seems like our fillings would be falling out. But it doesn't seem to really bother anything. Doesn't bother me. But I am kind of glad we never tried Tesla's idea for transmitting commercial electricity. On a side note....As a HAM radio operator I can find no rational reason FAA or Airlines restricted cell phone or other electronic devices on aircraft....
