Did you know ....
that a coffee filter, when dropped from a height, becomes a self-righting stable aerodynamic body? While most of you are probably rolling your eyes , I can imagine Kim saying, "What??!! Where are my coffee filters?"
Re: Did you know ....
In University of Hawaii College of Engineeering, Spring 1976 Intro to Engineering class, we had to build a device to successful catch a 2 lb. water balloon off the 4th floor (equal to 5 or 6 stories) of Holmes Hall. Previous semester, students had to design a device to protect an egg falling from the same location.andrew wrote:that a coffee filter, when dropped from a height, becomes a self-righting stable aerodynamic body? Perhaps a coffee filter shaped design would provide fall stability for an egg.

The "falling egg" protection capsule was a challenge that I remember back in my high school days (1974-78). I believe the best results were obtained by suspending the egg in a plastic bowl full of gelatin. I can't remember the survival "drop-height" though.
When I think about it now.. the results "could" have been tainted... because there had to be two layers of gelatin.. and after the 1st layer coagulated and the egg placed in the center.. then "boiling hot" gelatin would have been poured over the egg to fill the bowl... This in theory; could have partially hard-cooked the egg.. making it more resistant to rupturing.
I could go for a nice big fluffy western omelet right about now..

You'll be needing some of these if you want the best omelette you've ever tasted!

Ha! Okay you got me to laugh out loud. First the hard boiled buildup and then the omelet kicked me over the edge.

I had. to try it while I was making our morning coffee before turning in last night. It's true, the filters are self righting and sail perfectly upright and straight and land with authority.

Gee... I wonder how a paper coffee filter would work with shroud-lines attached for use as a small (A-engine) model rocket parachute? If nothing else.. it should at least act as a "streamer-type" would.
