Do these prices still apply?
When I signed my son up for the AMA I got him the magazine subscription. This led me to telling him how great the magazines used to be. I picked up some old mags for him at the hobby shop today and found this in the back of May 1973 model builder:

What was the purpose of the Left Hand Crankshaft? Was it for R/C or something else? Thanks, Andy

Thanks for sharing that Jim.
I'm sending my 10 cents for the 1/2a list.
I'll post it here when I get it.

It's a 1/2A Proto speed plane, so probably to help keep the plane tighter on the lines, especially taking off... torque roll to the outboard side.anm2 wrote:What was the purpose of the Left Hand Crankshaft? Was it for R/C or something else? Thanks, Andy

Re: Do these prices still apply?
I believe it was for control line speed flying. Left hand rotation pulls the model to the outside of the circle keeping the lines tight.anm2 wrote:What was the purpose of the Left Hand Crankshaft? Was it for R/C or something else? Thanks, Andy

Re: Do these prices still apply?
OK. Does the Tee Dee usually come with a left hand crankshaft, and what would the Right Hand Crankshaft be best for? Thanks again. Andy

Re: Do these prices still apply?
Most Tee Dees and other airplane IC engines come with right hand cranks, spinning clockwise from the pilot's perspective. I don't know why, maybe there's a reason other than because most of us are right handed. Maybe one of our aerodynamicists can tell us.anm2 wrote:OK. Re: Do these prices still apply?
I'd opine that left and right hand cranks, when used in combination on a twin-engine aircraft, would help neutralize the effects of engine torque.

Reverse rotation engines and great for CL carrier, when you're flying slow and when you punch the throttle. Everything pulls the lines tight.

Andy, most model engine propellers are right-hand, because most of the IC engines have a right-hand rotary-valve induction crankshaft requiring the use of a right-handed propeller... (right-hand; meaning a clockwise rotation as viewed from behind the prop/from the cockpit) Changing rotation in these engines requires changing the crankshaft.
A reed-valve induction engine however; can run in either direction effectively, by merely using a right or left-handed prop because of the engine's design... some advantages of L/H vs. R/H rotation were explained in the above comments.
Re: Do these prices still apply?
A lot of full size twins operate that way.SuperDave wrote:I'd opine that left and right hand cranks, when used in combination on a twin-engine aircraft, would help neutralize the effects of engine torque.

To add to SDs observation or opinion.... you can set either of the twin engines to opposite spin and the neutralizing effect is the same
Over time I acquired two left hand cranks for TeeDee .049 (still have both) but the project I wanted to model is so far down on the list they may end up one the sale block
My dad had a Cessna 310-Q that I was planning to scratch build (there are zero kits or plans for this bird) That i could find
I recall seeing a model with push pull engine set up and the builder used opposite turning engines with no apparent ill effect..IIRC they were OS 15s... I was sort of astounded as logic tells me in this configuration both would have an increase torque effect.... fairly large model with twin boom elevator

These old mags are great. I was looking through May 1979 model builder and found #2 of three part series by Dale Kirn on modifying cox engines. I will be going to the hobby shop tomorrow to try and find the other two. I will also look for the November 72 that has the Torky plan and article.

I sure like the reverse rotation engines I have, but I don't have a Cox yet. So Fred, if you ever want to sell, call me. Of course my kids say I have an engine problem.

RE: Do these prices still apply ?
Wow, Does that article bring back images of the era!! Those prices are great or were they?
When that mag came out in 1973, I was 4 years out of college, a good job with a Top 50 company living in Northern VA with a wife and a three year old !!!
I made top pay for the company at about $180 per week before taxes with a 1350 square foot house mortgage of $220/mo and a $100 month water bill which was about standard for the Washington, DC area. Food and everything else came after that..So $17.00 for a toy of any type was totally off the chart...Good old Richard Nixon and Wage and Price controls !!!
Wow!!! What fun !!!! The Good Old Days !!!!

Here's a picture of the LH prop sold by Dale Kirn, looks very much like the gray "competition" props. Also a couple of my secret weapons I think I might try...
Re: Do these prices still apply?
I just punched 17 1973 dollars into a inflation calculator, $93.21 today.

Re: Do these prices still apply?
OUCH!!!!
but, if you think about it 17 into 93 is almost like a new '73 Olds Delta 88 for 5k is about equal to a new Buick for 30k
and what a new 'hot Rod' 049 cost now days?

Did you get the Aero .049?JPvelo wrote:I just bought a new norvel for $54.
Remember not to follow NV's break-in procedure. They'll wear your liner out before you run it. Ken has posted about it on CEF, and I wrote a thread on the sublet in the 1/2A section at SH. It got the Larry Renger stamp of approval.
