RR-1 colors on a reedie
I made this engine out of three donor engines and a tank from CI. I took the ridge off a TD spinner with a drill and some wet or dry.
The cylinder is #1, two intake ports with SPI, all parts were new or like new. Came out pretty nice.

RR-1 Colors on a Reedie
Where did you get the big head needle? It put the finish on it. I've always liked the thin wall cylinder, stunt tank, and large needle look.
Cool

I use a 2" long "sleeve" of 3/4" i.d. garden or heater hose to grip those cylinders with slip-joint pliers.

Or you could use the standard Cox wrench in the exhaust ports as designed.
You have to make sure you have a good bite as it's somewhat easy to turn in a burr.

Yes it is... drives me nuts...
Re: RR-1 colors on a reedie
I got the idea from here on this. I believe it was Mudhen who said it, but not positive. Get a plastic bag, ziplock etc., and fold it in half, and then half again. Them fold it in half once more but sliding the cylinder between the two halves. Now use the cox wrench as intended. The bag will take up some of the slop in the wrench as well as act like a cushion. Will leave little to no marks at all on a cylinder.

Re: RR-1 colors on a reedie
My tool of choice is this heat sink, wrap layers of tape around the cylinder then clamp on the sink. The cylinder needs to be soaked, I'm worried too much will put a twist the cylinder.
I also found tape on the wrench for the exhaust ports works well, no bur.
I used the heat sink to do 99 engines,

Re: RR-1 colors on a reedie
If I ever resort to using the exhaust port tool on the wrench, I trap it horizontally in the vice, so it's clamping against the wrench's narrow sides. Then slide the engine into place and turn it. The vice should keep the wrench forks from spreading and causing a burr.

You said you got the tank from CI. What is CI?

Re: RR-1 colors on a reedie
If I never laid eyes on a RR-1, yours
would still be a pretty slick looking engine.
Great job on the spinner, Doug, looks like
the real deal. Good port orientation on the
cylinder too.

Looks great! From a distance or when up in the air, people would think you have a real one.
It doesn't have to have ribs and fins to be real, this is a really early one from Mud's collection.

Re: RR-1 colors on a reedie
1956. It was the initial issue RR-1, then there was a design change to the natural aluminum case with fins and the tank with fins.craig bernard wrote:The one from muds collection approximately what year would that one bee first time setting eyes on one of those?

Re: RR-1 colors on a reedie
The RR-1 didn't come out until half way into '56 and the initial version was produced for only a few months, making it the hardest to find Thimble-Drome engine made, many "experts" don't even acknowledge its existence.
