Re: Good day on Oak Creeks
Nice! Fishing is my other hobby. I've never caught a freshwater trout of any size, just a small Rainbow or two. I have caught plenty of what I call Speckled Trout in salt water on live bait. Sometimes when flounder trolling.

Definitely my biggest fish. I would live to try ocean fishing.

Great catch! We used to go fishing all the time but its been a good year and a half or so since I have last fished. I used to like ice fishing too, haven't done that in a few years now. Maybe sometime this summer we'll have to take the boat out.
Re: Good day on Oak Creeks
Good catch Jim. Should make for a well earned dinner.

Re: Good day on Oak Creeks
One of the joys of living in South Louisiana. Lake Maurepas is "brackish". Off the pier of the camp, we've caught many kinds of catfish, gar, choupique, various perch, and saltwater fish such as speckled trout, reds, sheepshead, stingray, and even a small bull shark. Not to mention the best blue crabs in the USA.
Nice catch. Beautiful fish.

Re: Good day on Oak Creeks
Very nice trout Jim! Like Rusty, my other hobby too. I'm much better at fishing, though. I'm very blessed to live in the Northwest, from the alpine lakes, low land lakes, the mighty Columbia, rivers everywhere, the Puget Sound, and the ocean. We can fish for something year round here.
Jim- Did you catch the trout on a fly? I love to fish for trout, tolling, flies, and casting, you name it.
Cajun66- I caught some sheepshead on Lake Erie in Ohio one time while fishing for walleye.

Duke,
I am no sure if freshwater drum are the same as sheepshead. Externally they appear similar, but in the south they have human like teeth. Very freaky!
I was very disgusted the first time I ever caught one. I was told it was normal though.

Re: Good day on Oak Creeks
Yeah, freaky. I think they eat barnacles with those teeth. You have to use a small strong hook too. About 80% of the time they spit it out when you finally get them into about an inch of water. In salt water Black Drum look sort of like Sheepshead but without the human teeth. We used to use hermit crabs to fish the holes at the end of wooden groynes(mini jetties, 100' long on the beach). But you can pick small barnacles off of those or off of the rip-rap and sew them together with thread for good bait that stays on the hook. My picture in my Gone Fishin' thread is of a Black Drum. Lots of people refer to Red Drum, but I call those Spottail Bass.Cribbs74 wrote:Duke,

Jim- nothing wrong with a little bait chucking!
Ron- I looked on Wikipedia and the fish I caught are called freshwater drum also, I didn't know that. The guide I was with just called them sheepshead. I saw pictures of all kinds on Wikipedia, saltwater and fresh, but not with teeth. We were catching walleye, they are tasty.

No wonder they're so hard to hook.

Alligator Gar?
Yeah man hideous. You are a better man than me if you eat those. If I hooked that thing I would cut the line.
I have had a craving for fresh trout ever since you posted that picture Jim. Thanks...

I don't eat gar unless someone else prepares it. Fun to catch, but too many bones.
Man, I'm definitely bringing a fly rod when I travel that way.
