Cox Engine of The Month
When is it enough?

When is it enough?
I was out in my shop getting ready to do some meat processing when I noticed I was weaving in and out of model aircraft. I decided to count them and I came up with 24 that were built and another 10 or so that are unbuilt.
My concern (besides storage) is when do I stop? I know there is always a better flying model or one that looks cooler than what I have.
Any of you guys beginning to question your sanity?

You beat me. I only have 21 plus 2 unbuilt and 1 in progress. Oh and one about to be ordered.Cribbs74 wrote:I was out in my shop getting ready to do some meat processing when I noticed I was weaving in and out of model aircraft. Then, again - I only started again in February.
Sanity? I thought engines were addictive! At least I know how many aeroplanes I have.
I almost forgot - 11 helicopters and two quadcopters!

Re: When is it enough?
I assume many of us are suffering from the same condition. I have not bought a Cox engine for many months now because I took a look and did some math. Conservatively if an engine lasts me 3 years of use then I have enough for the next 150... I do plan on dying one day.

If that the case I have enough Cox engines for 900 years.........Cribbs74 wrote:I assume many of us are suffering from the same condition. Maybe we should all just "move-in" together? Heck... we all get along reasonably well... Somewhere nice and warm and sunny... where there's never any wind.

Trouble is - engines are easy to store, display, leave laying around the place but with aeroplanes ..................

Re: When is it enough?
My boys and I have 42 finished CL'ers, 7 CL'ers in the build, near 20 CL kits, 3 RC planes built, 1 RC in the build, and one free flight, to the best of my knowledge. And I don't think I have a problem, so Ron, you're good for awhile.

Ok Duke,
Guess I am good up to 42 then. 43 however, is just too much.

When to stop? I plan to be buried with an X-Acto knife in my right hand, and a stick of balsa in my left hand. I'll be building for all eternity...Cribbs74 wrote:My concern (besides storage) is when do I stop?

Re: When is it enough?
I think I have 8 built, 2 retired, 2 awaiting rebuild or remake, 5 kits and a scratch build in line. I'll have to verify those numbers. I obviously need more!

Actually Rusty,
If I had gone for quality instead of quantity I would be better off. I'd rather have 7 excellent fliers than a hangar full of mediocre stuff.

I figure that we're having fun...in a hobby that drags your brain out into the light and makes you use it. I keep hearing that Alzheimers seems to be held off in people who stay mentally active, and also believe that people who have a focus and passion to pursue, just MUST have a better life.

When I am too feeble to ride motorcycles or crawl underneath cars I think balsa will be a good substitute.

Re: When is it enough?
Let's see...Nope, even including printed plans and bare engines and unbuilt kits I can't compete.
Phil
(about 12 built, in process, kits, or printed plans)

Looks like you need one of these:
Probably the best $500 I've ever spent.

Jim,
Thanks for the tip but unfortunately the SWTSMBO has commandeered the under bed storage!

Re: When is it enough?
So I am trying to bracket your engine collection and here is what I come up with:Cribbs74 wrote:I assume many of us are suffering from the same condition. If you use up 1 engine every three years then you currently own 50 engines. If you use up 50 engines every three years, you currently own 2,500 engines. So I am assuming you have between 50 and 2,500 engines. I really don't see the problem. You should spend more time building aircraft for your 2,500 engines, and you wouldn't have time to be thinking you have too many. In fact, you may discover you don't have enough! Anyway, in the interest of being a good neighbor, I would be happy to take some of your engines off your hands:)

Re: When is it enough?
I don't know for sure, but it's around 50 at least Cox anyway. I'd trade off any reedies for a TD though.
I have a good bunch of non-Cox as well.
Roddie, if you need a reedie shoot me a PM.
