Cox Engine of The Month
Animal Husbandry

Animal Husbandry
One of the downsides of animal ownership is having to dispatch sick amd suffering animals. Not something I enjoy doing at all. A while back I spent a good bit of money on some rarer breed of chickens. All went well for the first few months of development when all of a sudden I had several birds stricken with Mareks disease. Even though the disease has an extremely high mortality rate I was able to save the sick birds. Again all was well for a month when one of the birds that was previously sick comes down with it again. This time it became twisted and paralysed and began to permanently maim itself trying to walk.
I decided it was time and ended it's life. Like I said it really stinks to spend so much time on an animal only to have to put it down.
The point of this besides me blowing off steam is to let folks know that if they decide to keep animals there comes a point where you may have to make a tough decision. Be prepared before you bring something home.

Re: Animal Husbandry
I have had three cats and two dogs over the years. The youngest to have to be taken to the Vets for a final farewell was 14 and the oldest reached 17. Not only did I (still do) miss them, all five were together for a few years, it is hard to describe but they missed each other as well. When the last one died - I was reluctant to get another little doggy but couldn't resist.

Re: Animal Husbandry
With broken hearts we've dispatched pets saying never again will we endure such grief.
But in time the pain eases and one asks "Why should I deny ourselves the love and companionship a pet provides?"
Then is off to the Humane Society...........................................
That's been going on with us all our lives and currently "Meeghan" our calico cat reigns supreme.
"Dogs have masters but cats have servants." it's been said and rightfully so.

Our black cat Dela lets us live in our house as her minions.
She's nine years, and I know she won't be here forever.
When she leaves, I'll probably run right out and adopt a succesor.
The years of love and companionship greatly out-weigh the
misery of loss(for me anyway).

Re: Animal Husbandry
Yeah guys, it does stink. Chickens are probably not a traditional type pet, but they do grow on you. I realize there is a pretty hard line between house pets and barn animals.
The thing with house pets is you take them somewhere to be put down. Barn animals not so much.

I'm sorry Ron... I'm an animal lover, and so is my wife. When we met 8 years ago... she had 3 cats; all of which were females and over the age of 10 years... The last of them was put down 2 years ago... "Coconut"... she was 18.Cribbs74 wrote:Yeah guys, it does stink. Chickens are probably not a traditional type pet, but they do grow on you. We decided to adopt 3 kittens "Charlie, Linus and Lucy"... they had been living "feral" in a colony and rescued when they were about 3 mos. old. We got them about a month after that. They are 2 years old now, and are a constant source of joy!
