A bit different

A bit different
I've not been flying at all this year guys but got a chance to take a look at the field on Sunday.
One of the guys has splashed out on some First Person View gear which is like a drone
but without (at least I think without) the warhead.
I only got a chance for a quick couple 'films' cos as you can imagine it drew a lot of attention.
On this screen which he'd rigged up on the ground is what he sees 'up there' with his Virtual
Reality googles on. Check out altimeter, asi, etc etc.
Cracking piece of kit, if you see someone operating one go and have a look it's very impressive.

Re: A bit different
This FPV seems like a good way to pretend to a pilot (sat in the plane itself!). The video senders and screens are getting cheaper all the time.

Re: A bit different
The guy in New York that whacked himself with his helicopter was flying through goggles. Hmmm, depth perception is tricky. A spotter with eyes on is a good idea too.

Over here Rusty the BMFA (our AMA) stipulate that a spotter is mandatory.RknRusty wrote:The guy in New York that whacked himself with his helicopter was flying through goggles. Hmmm, depth perception is tricky. A spotter with eyes on is a good idea too.
Ian's right it's very close to the real thing, take off and (I thought) landings were most
realistic.

Re: A bit different
One of the first FPV videos (2006) I saw was also one of the best applications of technology. The flyer used an FM video downlink to a receiver attached to his virtual reality goggles so he was not tethered at all. However, the unique part was a two axis pizo gyro that was also attached to his goggles. The gyro was slaved into his transmitter and controlled a two axis gimbaled camera mount in the plane. When he turned his head, the camera slewed with the movement. If he turned his head to the right and looked down, the camera followed and he could see over the side of the plane and down at the ground --- it's like Kim's setup with his cameras being servo controlled, but in real time.
The decided advantage is being able to see objects immediately to your left and right that would normally be out of camera view when close by. It gave him a truly in-cockpit experience.
