Tee Dee The CEF TE Visits the Kennedy Space Center

Post  Sig Skyray Mon Jun 06, 2016 7:19 pm

Photos from the TE's visit to KSC. But first, some preliminary and interesting formalities from Wikipedia:

The John F. Kennedy Space Center (KSC) is one of ten National Aeronautics and Space Administration field centers, and is NASA's Center of Excellence for launch and payload processing systems.  Located on the east coast of Florida, KSC is adjacent to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
KSC has been NASA's primary launch center of human spaceflight since December 1968. Launch operations for the Project Mercury, Project Gemini all the numerous Saturn/Apollo missions, Skylab and Space Shuttle programs were carried out from Kennedy Space Center and managed by KSC.
Located on Merritt Island, Florida, the center is north-northwest of Cape Canaveral on the Atlantic Ocean.

There are about 700 facilities grouped across the center's 144,000 acres. Among the unique facilities at KSC are the 525 ft tall Vehicle Assembly Building (the VAB) for stacking NASA's largest rockets, Operations and Checkout Building which houses the astronaut crew quarters, and 3-mile-long Shuttle Landing Facility.

Nicholas and I were honored and humbled to host the TE here in Central Florida.  We put 3 runs on her for a total of about 12 minutes with our high RPM being recorded around 19,000 with the 5x3 prop. We were using Cox 25% nitro fuel. There's an engine run video on the previous page of this thread.

Long live the traveling engine and the CEF!

Greg & Nicholas

(Sorry for some of the engine pics lack of focus!)

Fantastic report. I can't think of a better place to show off the Traveling Cox Tee Dee .049. Maybe we should try alcohol, LOX, and castor oil. Call it Redstone Model Engine Fuel
Thanks Greg and Nick.

I could do it again. I've built three planes that it could go in since the first time round. Besides, I forgot to write anything in notebook the first time.

So I added some goodies to the kit. I added a pressure backplate, bored and polished venturi, two GloBee flat coil heads, and a red Valentine spinner.

I bored the Venturi to 9/64 then polished to a mirror finish.

I replaced the used head with a NOS high compression head.

I also replaced the piston. There were stress fractures starting around the top of the piston where the ball socket base is. It was in need of a reset but it was too late for that.

So it’s ready for its second tour. Get signed up!!!!!

Whoever wants it I can send it out.

Amazing Jason, simply amazing. I love the whole presentation as I do with all your offerings. But I am so unworthy of that engine. I'm waiting for a plain old .049 maybe slightly scrubbed up and neatly packaged Babe Bee.

Tee Dee Re: Follow The Traveling Engine!

Post  Kim Thu May 17, 2018 7:21 am

And so, the Traveling Engine returns for some more laps around the hill.  It (and I) enjoyed much friendlier conditions this time around, flying through the dead calm of a Springtime Missouri evening...with nary a snow drift in sight.

Once again bolted to the pylon of my 2M Bird of Time Sailplane, it was launched with a GoPro camera on each wingtip of the old model.  This was a bit of 'the spur of the moment' as the winds suddenly settled just as the sun was going down, and I was losing my light by the time everything got charged up.

Still, we took our shot, and got some pretty good footage for the effort, and may try to put in some more flights before the engine is mailed to it's next fan.  I intend to make up one video, featuring both the W.S.T.E. and it's .049 sibling, and post it on both threads following these castor slingers.

In the meantime, here are some still captures from the GoPros.

Have I mentioned that I love this hobby??!!

The Traveling Engine and 2M B.O.T. are almost invisible against the clutter of my very crowded shop.

Cruising high over the hill.   The folks over in the subdivision are probably once again wondering what the strange old guy across the valley has going on.

No 'drift diving' on this touch down.

Once again thanks to Jason for putting this old Tee Dee 'On the Road Again'!

Looks like that replacement piston it working well. Have any issues getting it running and holding a needle setting?

Great pictures as always.

It ran great Jason! I haven't counted the flights yet, but think there were five in in total before it got too dark, and the Tee Dee ran all the fuel out each time. After the needle was set on the first flight, all following were just fueled and chucked into the the air.

Thanks again for this fun project!!!

Okay, I currently have the .049 Travelling Engine.  If all goes well, I'm going to fly it tomorrow on my Skyray 110.  I put the engine on my trusty Redneck Engine Test Stand™️ to mount the APC 5.7x3 prop I plan to use and do a quick needle set before I go out tomorrow.  Prop tracks perfectly.  A quick clip to prove it really did run here.

*** SIGH ***

The wind was kicking up when I was at the field, and I didn't want to risk it on a 5 1/2 ounce plane. I'm only flying over grass, but I still didn't want to risk stuffing it on an upwind gust. I'll try again soon.
