Combat in New Jersey yesterday
Recently, we had a fellow who joined our club the Philly Fliers. His name is Rich and he was located in Puerto Rico. His son resides there currently and Rich is always taking pictures at our field. He has setup a facebook page for the Philly Fliers. Rich's son is also a advid control line flyer and he loves to see what were up to at the field. Hopefully I can meet Rich's son someday. Ron Cribbs had suggested video and were really still working on it. Rich however captured a few matches. The first match was yesterday Oct 7 in Vincentown, New Jersey. The contest is in it's 20 th yr known as the Dogday Dogfight October Air Wars. We had a good turnout yesterday with 18 pilots in speed limit and 9 in 1/2A. I love 1/2A and this is why I enjoy this site so much. When your talking 1/2A, your speaking my language. My son Shawn just dominated the circles yesterday.
1/2A combat has become quite popular. These are not your average 1/2A's and they have as much power as a modern sport .15. Rich has captured which by the way is extremely hard to do some good footage. The first video is my son Shawn flying a fellow who drove down from Boston, Mass which was a 7 hr drive for him. These are .32 size foamies. Shawn is next to impossible to shake. In this video, you can see how Shawn just sticks to his opponent like glue. He doesn't let up and the cut eventually goes in his favor.
The second video is Shawn flying the same fellow in 1/2A. These are both Cyclon powered 1/2A's. They're just awesome. The speeds are incredible and the reflexes required are extremely important. That match which the video doesn't show in entirety was awarded to Shawn's opponent. Shawn does get a cut which has the streamer tagging along but he didn't take the knot for the kill. We managed to get back up and Shawn was killed when they got into another line wrap. You can see in this video that although they got into line tangles, they both got out. This happened 3 times in that match. THis usually results in carnage and a unflyable plane, but this was an interesting match and they both worked hard at it.
The last video, this is Shawn and myself flying Norvel powered Litehawk's. Both planes on 45% nitro and full song. Shawn flies a Big Mig, I use a AME. I see very little difference other than the Big Mig's ability to swing a tiny bit more prop. Fly time is almost identical and the performance is awesome, both engines are Rev Lite versions. These both have the Cox 128 TPI needle conversion with the venturi stack totally removed and Cox rubber ducky props on both engines trimmed down. The AME has a 3 7/8" prop while the Big Mig has 4 1/8". This is what was needed to match the speeds repeatedly.
I have to thank our club member Rich for the ability to get these vids and pictures that are also available on this Facebook page. Enjoy, Ken

I don't think I will ever be good enough to fly 1/2A combat. Too fast! Those .32 sized ships were more my pace!
Great videos! Tell Rich he did a good job.

Re: Combat in New Jersey yesterday
Ron, truth be told, I thought the same thing. I never did this as a kid and I always wanted to. I couldn't even fly with another pilot in the circle until about 6 years ago. You can't go nuts, some people just go Kamikaze on you. This is going to result in somebody getting ticked off. Learning to chase and follow is most important. The Speed Limit planes are really fun, but even though they appear slow when drawing a comparison between them and 1/2A, they're fast. Ken

It sure looks like a blast. Is Shawn the righty or the lefty?

Re: Combat in New Jersey yesterday
I think Shawn is the lefty Rusty. I have watched him fly in person. He was flying in 35 mph sustained winds with gusts well over 40 and made it look like it was a calm day. He was flying a Ring and a Streak as well as 1/2A. He is impressive to watch. I wish I had gotten into this earlier in life.

That was as clear as any combat video I've seen. Notice the cut streamer floating off to the right.

Re: Combat in New Jersey yesterday
Shawn is a lefty and flies lefty. I'm a lefty as well but I fly with my right hand. We had two Russian fliers on Sunday, I had to laugh as this puzzled one of them to no end. He couldn't fly him the way he wanted to and this drove him crazy. When we left that evening, he said " Take care my left handed friend as I find way to beat you". I enjoy watching the videos as well. I certainly would like more of them. I can see all my mistakes I make. When I fly him, I just really enjoy chasing. We both practice doing that and I find that quite hard to do at times. His mind is certainly is working faster and he throws the wiggles in and this causes me to lawn dart the plane almost everytime.
