Re: Bratco model airplane
The Bratco company made this model and what I believe was known as the Hexadrone. They used Big Mig startup engines and sold for under $50 a model. The models became extremely popular at or around the time that Sig MFG. was discontinuing Norvel engines and parts. Norvel for the most part was now a defunct company and therefore users of Norvel engines were now buying these ARF control line planes for their engines and parts. There was at that particular time one hobby shop on Ebay that was the only known source of parts for Norvel engines. The parts were just non existent as only a handful of online hobby shops were carrying parts. The Bratco company utilized the Big Mig startup engines which used a starter spring and also a tank mount which was also a Norvel factory item. The planes in general flew fairly well. The Skybaby had a extremely weak stab and this was always subject to breaking. The Hexadrone which was a flying wing did ok but was on the porky side. They certainly flew well compared to other 1/2A ready to fly planes. The Norvel certainly provided decent power. Super rare to me has a different definition. I've seen many and I flew this particular model myself. Ken

Re: Bratco model airplane
Sig had these up at Oshkosh for Kid Venture one year. I tought they flew nice, fairly aerobatic, but nothing great.
I think i had got there about the second day and there were already a lot of repairs on them. They were built much the Thimble-Drome TD-3 a half century earlier.

I have a SkyBaby hanging from the ceiling in my basement. I believe I paid around $60 for it from the hobby shop several years ago.
And hey look! There's the box for it in the crawlspace LOL.

Re: Bratco model airplane
Mark pretty much summed up the flying characteristics. They did ok and obviously for those more experienced they could certainly be assisted through more recognizable maneuvers. Funny thing is that Mark mentions the similarities between the Skybaby and the TD plane that Cox made. How very true they do look similar. That being said the Hexdrone which I unfortunately thought was Hex a drone also shares similarities.
I came across a old timer designed by the legendary "Wild Bill Netzeband". The Half Fast looks just like the Hexdrone. The Half Fast is a half century old design as well. Here's my half fast waiting repair. It's an oldie for certain. This is all silk and in absolute need of repair. Ken
