Old model airplane graveyards
I have been corresponding with Vaughn of Black Hawk Models lamenting the escalating cost of balsa models. I had mentioned that I used to pay $2.95 for Scientific Models that now retail for $35.00+.
He mentioned that he used to pay .10 to .50 cents for Comet models and that many of his old Scientific Models were rotting away in Vermont land fills. I told him that most of my old and damaged models were burned in a fireplace once resulting in a chimney fire and that others (in my youth) were set on fire and launched free flight into the sky.
I can’t remember any just being tossed in the trash, but they must have been. More recent, last twenty years or so I retire them to the attic protected by large plastic bags.
Wondering what you do with your old models? Hang them in the garage maybe?

The same emotional approach on my side..I have many balsa RC plane wrecks stacked in plastic bags in my attic that I did not have the soul to put in the garbage or fireplace or whatever abyss. I kinda feel responsible also for having wrecked them.. Like with your old dog that one day will pass away and you do a decent funeral for..
I wonder what my grand children will say some years from now when they find it ...."hahaha, what a weirdo our grandpa is/was..."

The ones that are totally wrecked we usually give a "viking" funeral, i.e. we set fire to them...
The nice ones I keep in a good place, with the intention of flying them again.

I have a few hanging as ragged decorations. And older ones throughout the years were usually so thoroughly ruined that the only pieces worth keeping are in my engine drawer and used bellcrank, music wire, wheel and assorted hardware pile. A couple of the hanging slagtites are slated to be reproduced, including a Stuntman 23. I like Kris's method, salutation, then immolation.

Re: Old model airplane graveyards
When I saw the title of this post, the first thing I though of was the woods surrounding the local RC club. Many aircraft have been lost in those woods, and few were ever recovered. It's like the Bermuda triangle even - there is one area of the flyin site where many of the older pilots swear that they lose control of their aircraft and they get sucked into the woods.
As far as what I do with my old airframes... Most of the plane gets destroyed or thrown away, but I always mount the tail section on the wall in the pool table room.
