Stick and tissue fighter
last night, the temperature was around -20*C. So instead of flying, I'm building. This time I'm building the plane from my avatar, 55cm wingspan:

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
If I find one, perhaps. An 010 would be perfect for it. I made provisions in the airframe to accomodate electric power, so if I don't find a PeeWee, I will probably make it electric. I need a silent plane for park flying anyway.

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
what you see on the pictures weighs 33g. With an 010, I could probably fit into 100g/4oz. 049 would surely be too much.

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
Covering the wings only added 2g of weight. Now the only stuff left in the airframe is the engine cowling and the landing gear spats. I estimate the complete airframe will be about 40g (over a quarter of which is the landing gear). That leaves 60-70g for the equipment

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
As you can see, I did an acceptable job covering the wings. I went wild with the dihedral because I want to fly it on elevator/rudder only. The wing is a bit askew on the picture, because I only found one rubber band to hold it, actually, the symmetry is fine.

Looks really clean! Is that green tissue, or coloured dope?

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
hi Dirk,
Nice! Tissue looks great, you're right .010 or electric.
I just build a slightly larger (and heavy) Li'l Stick and have been having a blasts with it, with a small motor its got all the power i need. Also its pretty neat with the small stuff they don't break too bad, I've spun it into the ground twice now with only a couple broken props.

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
It's green tissue. Not japanese tissue, just something you wrap presents in. It's quite light at 22g/m^2 and shrinks fantastic. I found a light-bluish color perfect for the bottom surfaces, but I haven't found the correct olive color for the top ones. I could only choose between green and brown, so I went for the green one. It's much to green and to bright, but hey, it's not an actual scale plane anyway.shell shock wrote:Looks really clean! Is that green tissue, or coloured dope?

Unfortunately, 010 prices are prohibitive, so I guess it will be an electric after all.

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
I hate to say it (especially on this site, lol) but i think on a tissue/stick job electric is favored, no fuel proofing, no oil soak, no clean up, no noise...

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
I don't like the engine cowling I made. I don't like the looks of it, and I don't like the fact that it will prevent me from using an IC engine.
Do you have any tips on how can I make a nice (and light) cowling?

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
Dummy mount your engine. (mount it so it can be removed and reinstalled a couple times. Blind or T-nuts work well.)
Make a "washer" or "donut" out of a thin piece of balsa or ply that suits the mount and firewall. This may end up "U" in shape instead of round.
Make another washer or donut or U that suits the thrust washer of the motor. The outside of this will have the desired nose profile.
Join these with suitable planking and sand to profile. Alternately join with thick balsa stick and fill the gaps with planking.
Now to mount you use a wire that goes through the cowl and applies tension against the back of the cylinder. The wire just fits into a cooling fin gap to hold it steady. You will need to reinforce the wood with thin ply or metal tubing, and the wire is just sprung into place.
You can use rubber bands and eyes instead. You can also glue in the blocking leaving enough space for access to the screws.
Have fun. I have made cowls a couple times.

Re: Stick and tissue fighter
I decided to take the easy route with the engine cowling.
I found a small plastic bottle, which has perfect shape and size. I will just cut the bottom 4cm off and use as the cowling.

Hello Dirk,
It's a shame. I followed the building thread. Unfortunately, it's part of the hobby. Happy repairing. It might be the occasion to make some improvements.

yep, contrary to what some say, they usually do fly better the second time.

Model aircraft builders have to be a patient breed. One of mine keeps reminding me of that... as I wait for the glue to dry, thinking of calm blue skies.
