What models came with a three fin high compression head? Does anyone know the story behind this head?

i have 2 TD 049's from 63 and 65, and 1 o51 from 70 that came with the 3 fin...a few spares that are in real old packaging..................not sure why and when they removed one of the fins, but probably a cost related thing, or that the thicker walled cylinders just didn't need the cooling beefit of the third fin.

i think they are worth collecting.

The 1702 was standard on Tee Dees, not sure why only three fins, likely a heat issue. I don't think they really saved any money by deleting one fin.

some info i found on the 3 fin TD head..............looking at my stock confirms the combustion shape too.
the early 1702 3 fin is far left, the center is a standard 302 and the far right is a current 1702
the combustion shape is different from the early version to later version............

Good info, thanks guys! Interesting to see how different the combustion chamber shape is between the early 1702 compared to the later.

I have a new three fin 1702 sealed in its original bubble pack. Is it better to leave it sealed or is it OK to open it and use it on a display engine?

It's your head, if you think it would look better displayed on an engine then go for it. I don't think the three fin TD heads are super rare or anything just different.

Platinum, like gold and titanium, is not very reactive with anything in the air, so it won't corrode if you unpack it and put it on display.
