eBay heap-o-parts

eBay heap-o-parts
Just got this on Saturday on eBay. Fresh off the farm as I call them. A few TD's, babe bees, QRC, RC Bee, golden bee, couple of black widows, and some product engines. Also an Ace RC backplate throttle and a NIP 3 fin 1702 head were also buried in there.
Been working today to get some cleaned up an restored.
Have six more to go through. This is the fun part of collecting.

Looking good, how does that Ace RC throttle work?

Looks to be a needle valve type throttle. Not sure how well they worked. Here is a pic of the instructions.

Looks good Jason! What's your procedure for polishing them?
Cheers, Paul

I completely disassemble the engines. Remove the drive hub and crankshaft. The parts then get a bath in denatured alcohol for an hour or so to loosen up the castor. Clean the parts with a stiff nylon bristle brush.
I will brighten the backplate if the plating is good with some 0000 steel wool. Just enough to remove the tarnish and bring out the brass look again. On the early bright backplates I leave them alone.
I will sand the tanks and glow heads on the lathe with some 1000 then 2000 grit. Just enough to smooth them out.
The crankcases I dont normally sand and leave the extrusion marks on them. one can spen a lot of time here to really get them smooth if needed.
If the cylinder is all marked up there is not much you can do to fix that other than a new cylinder. I only clean with a stiff bristle nylon brush not to remove the blueing.
I will then take Mothers mag wheel polish to the parts. Usuallly going over them a few times to get the mirrored look. Leaves your finger tips black if you are doing it right!
I will then clean all the parts again in a different bath of denatured to remove the left over polish. I also wash my hands to remove any polishing grit on my fingers.
I will then finish clean them with a damp paper towel to remove any traces of grit.
Reassemble the crakncase. Install new rebuild kit and reassemble the engine with a light coat of 2 cycle engine oil in the crankcase and cylinder.
Takes alot of time!

I have had some success in removing plier marks from cylinders using a small triangular fine steel file. I follow it up with gun blue to darken it back up. It never looks good as new, but it looks a lot better than what you start with.

Re: eBay heap-o-parts
More from the same seller. I asked if he had any more Cox stuff that he was selling. He sent pictures of what he had an I made an offer. This arrived today from him. More cleanup time needed!
I think this puts me over at 250 Cox engines now in my collection. Is this considered hoarder status?
