Below a pic of 3 different reeds.

On the left is your classic OEM Mylar reed.

In the middle is one that is more opaque. I seems a bit stiffer.

The one on the right is transparent, like glass. It is much softer.

Any idea what the two latter ones are?

Looks like the last one is a type of mylar.

The two left ones are definitely Mylar. The one on the right I am usure of. It's also softer. I'm pretty sure it's also an OEM product.

That changes things up quite a bit. I wonder if vinyl or eisenglass was ever used?

The Mylar reeds in most of my engines are more like the middle one in your pic, an opaque white color. How about Mylar star reeds for .049s? I bought a lot of 10 from who I believe was Dan Sitter on eBay some years ago. I have put most of them to use, recently gave one to Jason_WI. I seem to like them better than the rectangular Mylar reeds.

(not the best photo to show opacity with its white background)

I just recall I pulled a very transparent star reed out of one of my engines and put in an oblong reed.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is a material source or supplier change situation.

There is a guy on RCG selling clear ones like that, that he cuts himself. Someone posted a link a few days ago.

I think I have one cox engine with transparent reed in it, which looks just like the third one. it looks like glass and can be bend a little , but brittle. its called MICA sheet, which is the same material as isolator for early TO-3 type power transistor in home stereo.
