Sorry for the newb type question, but sometimes we have to go backwards to move forward.

I have been installing my pickup tubes in the 8 O'clock position and I am wondering if the 9 O'clock would be better. I think I saw it at 9 on the Gibeault Mouse race guide.

Ron, this is a very good question. In fact it's not an easy one to answer. I explained this to Rolla recently and I'm providing him with a tutorial of my experiences with tanks of the how and why. I can very well try my hand at posting some of my findings. The best way to describe what's happening is to swing a bucket of water around and what happens to the water. It goes up the side wall and stays to the outside obviously. I for one would certainly like to experiment a little more with this as I've had some engines just defy everything that I already know. I for one would always try to fix the pickup to the rear and when I've taken some of these engines apart, I found the pickup not in the rear where I originally had it placed and these have been my best runners.

I truly believe what happens here is that as we start getting more involved with our flying and pushing the envelope a bit further the more we start finding faults with our engine runs due to this. Flying level and an occasional wingover doesn't really demand much in terms of a fuel tank until we start doing outsides, inversion, and just all around stunt flying. It then becomes apparent that we can't have the engine quit when we need it most. I certainly would try and raise your pickup a bit higher. This may give you more run time inverted and also less troublesome runs when doing outside maneuvers. It's just that somewhere through the course of the engine run it is going to lean the engine due to the pickup not being totally submersed in fuel. Ken

On the metal backplate there is a little shelf you can prop the tube on that holds it in place. On these I put it on top of that and it's at about 9:00 looking from the front. With the plastic plate I just prop it against the screw boss at 8:00. There's not much difference. Just remember to draw out the rest of the fuel after a bench run because it leaves about a half tank in it when it sucks air and shuts off.

matt and berid I belive sell the tubing to replace the old petrified tubes that can`t be bent to the ideal locations.
I replace the tube and make it reach the bottom on the tank to get a full run out of the tank.
Its not a lot of fun to make the tubes snake to the bottom of the tank sometimes but I do it anyway

Thanks guys,

I run mostly metal backed tanks, I'll try it at 9 and see if they run better. Obviously bladder is better. I am just not ready to totally give up on the reedies just yet. Mostly due to the simplicity of having an integrated tank. The TD is a bit too powerful for me still.

Thanks for the explaination Ken. It is the outsides and inverted that give me grief. Funny thing is my beat down Baby Ring has a plastic tanked widow on the nose that runs in any postion and it's no different than the one on my Bean as far as setup goes. It's hit and miss sometimes for sure.

Ron

Ron, I know of a fellow that uses a pin vise to drill a small hole in that gate so to speak that Rusty is pointing to. He then uses a fine piece of copper wire to hold it there. Ken

Now there's an idea that's worth trying.

That mod is mentioned in the mouse building article as well. I thought about doing it.
