One Battered Chipmunk !!!! Or "First...Lance Armstrong..Now This !!!!"

One Battered Chipmunk !!!! Or "First...Lance Armstrong..Now This !!!!"
Worked a deal with some of my buds here to net myself a slightly gnarled Cox Chipmunk for restoration, followed by some re-gnarling at the end of some Spiderwire!
FIRST OF ALL...THIS IS NOT AIMED AT YOU, SO DON"T EVEN START WITH ANY APOLOGIES OR SUCH !!!! THIS WAS NOT YOUR FAULT---AS EVIDENCED BY YOUR GALLANT ATTEMPTS AT ARMORING THE POOR THING FOR SHIPMENT!!! I JUST GOT TO VENT A BIT...THEN I'LL FIX THIS SUCKER !!!!!
Anyway, the postman and I arrived at my house at the same moment, and my highly-trained-model-airplane-nerd-sense immediately detected skullduggery afoot !!!!!
I'm not sure if it was his sheepish, generally guilty demeanor, the boomerang-shape of the box, or it's hemorrhaging of packing peanuts that gave it away, but I knew SOMETHING wasn't right!
Upon my challenge that he had assaulted my barely-claimed property, my gallant government-supported purveyor of packages replied that his supervisor JUST HAPPENED to be riding with him, and that I could take up the matter with him! (This is the kind of weird crap that probably made Howard Hughes start collecting his toenail clippings in matchboxes, and storing his urine in milk bottles!)
Mr. Supervisor simply brushed me off with the statement that since the package was uninsured, there was nothing that he (or I) could do...even-though they could tell that it had obviously been damaged by their own cherished organization. These two living examples of government efficiency then exited my driveway, probably to dump the rest of their troublesome cargo in a ditch somewhere (it happens here).
Damage Assessment:
Wing is bent and broken in several places.
Left stabilizer is also bent.
Elevator horn is freshly and neatly snapped.
Empenage has a nice bend to the left, to counter the rudder's correct sway to the right.
So...the plan is to slow-epoxy an arrow shaft across the underside of 'munk's wing and park a toolbox on it 'till after the Tach Race, heat-bend the bent parts back to somewhat straight status, and figure a way to re-attach the elevator horn to that shaft-like elevator center piece.
Ahhh...now I feel better !!!!!

Although, I don't feel an arrowshaft adds a lot of weight, it's certainly weight. I've had lots of success using foam. I can say if it's already bent, bending it back and using heat like a Monokote iron may assist getting things on par. Worst case scenario requires the cracking and breaking of the already damaged area and glued on straight. When you achieved the straightness, injecting thinned white glue using a hypodermic needle around the crease would be in order on top and bottom of the wing. Let that sit for a day and I would certainly cover the wing in 000 silkspan using thinned to the consistency of milk white glue and water applied with a sponge brush. The Chip already suffers from porkiness. I use the fiberglass packaging tape 2" evenly wrapped onto the top and bottom of the trailing edge of the wing. This needs to be then ironed on and this can also assist in the straightening. Adding additional strips of this same tape, I cut them into 1/2"-3/4" strips about 12"-16" long applied parallel to the leading edge mid chord will help strength immensely. You would have to lose all the gingerbread however. Those stickers may not be an easy find. Substituting for vinyl tape may be necessary.
I may just have a set of wings and will go through my stash. Ken

Thanks Ken!
Don't cut anything out of your inventory that you might need though! I dunno...this arrowshaft is calling mighty strongly to me !!!!!!!! Thanks for the tip on injecting white glue!!!!!
As Tim Taylor might say, "What this thing needs is more POWER!"

Bummer deal Kim, hope you get her all fixed up soon
Re: One Battered Chipmunk !!!! Or "First...Lance Armstrong..Now This !!!!"
hey buddy, I feel your grief! I sent a mint Cox 1911 Curtiss to Canada and somebody decided to sit on the box, the buyer sent a photo... there wasn't an unbroken piece to be found!
Look at it this way...this is one of those life's challenges that help sharpen us. I'd look at carbon fiber tubing sold at most hobby shops now days, cut a channel across the bottom and ca (foam friendly) that sucker right in. I like the idea of white clue injected into the creases. I also think you can swap out the engine with something stronger...or build a balsa constant cord wing, that would really wake that thing up!

That's awful Kim my heart goes goes out to you Mate.
An observation people...
Hmm supervisors in vans????
Clearly something going on.
I hate to observe this Guys but hence forth I think everyone
On the forum should consider insured to the max.
Don't forget my 'Guaranteed 5 day delivery' for the TeeDee
Tach race in November.
1 day to London to New York
24 sat in New York
Then Another 3 days to Oklahoma...
If I had to explain 'disinterest' or 'indifference' to an Alien,
I'd play him her or it the conversation I had with USPS
After 15 days. The guy couldn't have given a toss.
Perhaps it's symptomatic of the organisation?
Insurance guys and for goodness sake keep the
Receipt safe/I didn't! lucky it eventually turned up
Cos I couln't have replaced one of the engines.
Doh

Naw, I appreciate it, but it's all good. I'll get the thing going, and am sure to get a lot of entrainment of the deal in the future ! I was starting to run low on Facebook Subjects anyway!
Insurance is good, but should not be an extortion type of deal: "Give us extra money or we will damage your stuff!"
These guys obviously knew their outfit did the damage, but wouldn't, or couldn't, man-up and do the right thing, insurance or not !!

Wow Kim,
That's pretty ugly. You'll fix it though. I can't believe they dump mail in the ditches. Whatever happened to the "Federal Offense" stigma?

It's apparently still a big deal (dumping mail)...IF you get caught. The brother of our local UPS guy was a postman, and got caught dumping a BUNCH of mail in ditches down south of here. There was a big deal made of it at the time, but has since gone away. Figure the guy sob story and got probation or some such from one of our squishy judges.

I have that wing and maybe a couple other items for that plane. It was our first C/L'er I saved the wing, thinking I would finish building the full fuse one day. But I tossed the balsa fuse I started over a year ago and lost interest in finishing it. I would love to to trade you.
Duke
Heck I could even just give it to you. I'd insure it!
