Cox Engine of The Month
My Uncle Wayne's "Hope" .19 Engine

My Uncle Wayne's "Hope" .19 Engine
Visited with my Uncle Wayne this past Sunday, and borrowed a couple of his engines to run and photograph.
One of his rarest engines is this Japanese .19, manufactured by the Hope engine company.
An extensive listing of these engines and their history by a fellow named Adrian Duncan can be reviewed at: http://modelenginenews.org/ad/hope_p1.html
After cleaning out a plugged spray-bar, I ran Wayne's engine on some 10% Glowplugboy Fuel and a Tornado 8-4 prop. I didn't bother to tach it or even peak it out of 4-stroke rich, but just stood back and enjoyed watching this old engine run.
And no...I didn't load reversed images of the Hope...It's a Lefty !

That's a great restoration --- looks really good and seems to run well too.

Looks good. I bet it barked with the open exhaust.

Thanks Travis,
For a guy who lives "Out in the sticks", my Uncle seems to accumulate these things in startling numbers !!
I don't think he'd ever run this engine, and I only cleaned it enough to get it to fire up. He's wanting to fly it on an appropriate control liner at some point, so we'll see.

I can't speak for this engine, but I believe that the OS Max-S series was one OS's first engines from Japan to have a solid one piece casted case. Most engines of that period from Japan had the 4 bolt front end similar to what Enya still uses today. This .19 certainly looks to pre date the Max engine. Many of the engines from Japan shared similar characteristics from one manufacturer to another. Seeing that K&B also used the opposed exhaust stack as well leads to believe that many ideas were shared from manufacturer to manufacturer and countries. A neat example thanks for sharing Kim. Ken

Yeah, headsets are mandatory ! I'm REALLY enjoying my little, indoor Engine Test Cell. Got to make it a little more "break-downable" and add an exhaust shroud...then we're fixed up !!!

It's alive! With a name like "Hope" was there ever any doubt?
