here is the result
and a short video from the first test run today.... no ground running yet, i still need to build a tether pole and line.

Re: 010 tether car
Dude your a legend
That's an awesome little bit of kit can't wait to see it running if your struggling with pole etc I have found that a brake disc and a bearing from a cam belt tensioner work really well !! Just spot weld the bearing on then make a small flag and hey presto mobile tether racing wherever you go spray it up and it looks cool too I'm sure you already know this but when I made mine I built it too high ( the anchor that is ) and at full chat the car was getting airborne so had to lower everything down so line ran parallel to the ground good work can't wait to see a test run !!!!!!

My very basic attempt a few years ago ran very well although had problems with the tyres ballooning and shooting across the car park !!!

Re: 010 tether car
thanks guys
dizzy
hadnt thought of using a brake disc... but that isnt a bad idea.... i was just going to get a plate laser cut.
might make a couple of calls tomorrow and see what turns up.
what tyres were you using??
try foam rc car tyres maybe 1/12 scale for yours?
i am running foam 1/24 slot car tyres... should be good for 100mph+(wishful thinking)
and relatively cheap and easy to replace.

Re: 010 tether car
I found some old tamiya kits from when I was a kid they were 1/32 supposedly from some cars I used to race in channels "AA" powered I think it was called the avante yes for a 1/32 they are huge probably scale up to about 5 foot ! But nice and sticky
I had thought of using 1-12 mardave wheels and tyres as I have loads as used to run a club with 1-12 stock cars and hit Rods but they just looked too big would have to build a different chassis I do have a rather nice shell though a ford model T was ginna turn it into a drag / open wheel hot rod too many models not enough time .. See my latest thread !!!!! Good idea using 1/24 foamies though used to race 1/24 many many moons ago and they were rapid never remember anyone losing tyres !!! Good thinking

i raced 1/24 slotcar for quite a few years(and many other things since)... that was sort of where this idea came from.
it started with, how can i make a really cool slotcar, and how can i make a car for the 010
the 2 ideas sort of fell together,...
along with childhood memories of standing at the SSME tether car track watching a blur with fingers in my ears and that lovely smell in the air

Re: 010 tether car
nice find dizzy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCpbypqfAjA
i hadnt seen that one before. would love more detail on it.
i had considered (when i improve the throttle, see profile pic) rigging the throttle control to be actuated via the standard slot car controler.
so it would be a proper nitro slotcar, but then it is only a very small step(yes i am heading there) to being full rc.
with a little tweaking and rearranging of parts, loose the tailshaft, pinion and flywheel direct off crank. no need for fuel cut off if the throttle is improved
or onboard glow if it can be warmed up prior to hitting the ground(lower gearing, and lower rpm with throttle)
just need to build a steerable front axle...
1/30 scale nitro sprintcar!
010 power direct drive
noise smell and no stopping..... just like the real thing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxbtOdhCCGQ
had already started on an elec version... but nitro is so much more fun
yes that is another slot car chassis, the same, with cage attached

Re: 010 tether car
Wow nitro slot car actuated by standard 12v dc hand throttle now you have me thinking of ways to make it happen thought about cramming an 049 into 1/32 womp chassis before but stopped as I had about 30 a4 pages of sketches I drew out and was getting slightly obsessed !!!! Couldnt worknout how to get smooth throttle response Think it could be done but like you say throttle would be the major player here getting it slow enough to handle standard 1/4 turns bet someone has done it !

I like it, can't wait to see it run. For a good joke, throttle it and run it on the slot track

Nice Womp Womp! Never thought of using one "off the track" so to speak. I use to have a wicked fast Womp in the mid 90's that had a 33 Ford body on it and the largest engine you could buy at the time and a pretty slick controller. The back straight-away was my favorite place to drag race the other cars
Sadly, there is no place to run them around St. Louis any more... and I had long since sold it, which incidentally was my only bad ebay experience (mainly due to selling out of the country).

Mine was metallic pearl purple with lime green flames.

thanks again guys

dont start another project until you finish a current one!... i dont want to feed your addiction.
maybe you need to finish your tether car?
ron
will probably call past the local slot car track in the next few days... the owner wanted me to bring it down when finished, he thought i was nuts when i used to race...
.... he says that apparently things havent changed??
travis
i looked at using the womp chassis to start with... but it has so much real estate to play with with those wings out the side...
might do a womp as the first rc version.. nice to have that extra room.... and some really cool bodies!

Ado
Very funny I totally agree I have "ups" and this thread is making me worse just wanna get building another tether but you are right too many "up's" already this is one I did finish though well sort of never got round to splashing it with signage used to race this long time ago with very good results it's heavy but was good at bullying everything else on the track !!! Re: 010 tether car
Used a Parma "home set" chassis then built up the iron work around that then made body out of tin good memories there is a definite lack of slot car clubs nowadays ... Very sad " alt="" />

Re: 010 tether car
Hey ado yes that's very cool the flexi 1 and 2 were reputable the best chassis never owned one myself always made scratch built ones but all the guys used to run them and were v v v quick much quicker than me !! Still enjoyed trying to keep up though when I did eventually get on the podium ( not for being the quickest more for consistency) I was very happy tried one wow awesome cars always had trouble with getting bodies though I think there was only one importer for Parma in the uk back then am loving the controller as well what I found was that to the dismay of all the boys who won races by spending the most bucks in the end all of us who only had old chassis and kept with them ended up being just as competitive by "knowing" the car brings back memories good good memories

i was never a great driver... so needed all the help i could get...
my cars on the other hand were desired by a few of the guys that i raced against.
there were a few times i loaned them out during practice sessions just prior to a race....
... most of the guys could usually gain a tenth or two using one of my cars.. and my cars held the unofficial lap record(wasnt set during a race).
i did prep cars for a couple of guys for big meets, they claimed even if they werent going any faster, that it just felt easier to drive and helped the consistancy
a.
p.s.
called in to see a mate yesterday... missed out on a flywheel that went for scrap(one day earlier) would have made great tether base
