I commented, what the heck do you think I went off talking about hinges for, Mr. sensitive?

I'm thinking if this discussion were occurring face-to-face it would have a different tenor, Mr. Moderator.

Kit or scratch
Dave has posed the question and his opinion a few times on the economics of scratch building vs. kits
I have a few thoughts on that but: Hinges....first.
I love the durability and simplicity of sewn hinges over cloth tape. If the elevator (and rudder on RC) is thick enough I much prefer to slot and use DU-BRO #117 Nylon hinges with the metal pin. Installed correctly they are by far the most "loose" and aesthetically "hidden".
To kit or not to kit based on relative cost?
For me that greatly depends on my stash of wood and/ or parts bin of hardware. Also considered is the time needed to cut parts vs. a kit or short kit with die or laser cut parts. These days it is much easier to decide to scratch built and “cheat” as there are quite a few sources who will laser cut to your dimensions the ribs and bulkheads. And I might suggest that if you’re considering a very simple constant chord wing the ease of profiling foam with a hot wire is a very good way to create several wings for exceptionally low cost (and weight)
Lastly I must say that there are a few aircraft I want to build (with my grandson) from kit, no matter the cost, simply to recreate the experience of sitting at my father’s side reading plans and handing glue, parts or tools.
Rusty….I can hardly wait on what aircraft you put the RR1 on…I am sure it will be sleek, fast, maneuverable, and finished spectacularly!

Re: Need a good model for my RR1.
Fred I'm in idea-mode right now. This is something that will be decided on in January or February and built during the Spring. Spring has been when I do a serious build for the last couple of years, mainly due to the attrition of overworked old planes and the wearing out of my Bean while learning to stunt. This coming Spring, with two Baby Flite Streaks and my Re-Fried fried Bean(my Spring '11 build), and the Li'l Satan all in fine shape, I'll have time to put something nice together that compliments the RR1.fredvon4 wrote:...Rusty….I can hardly wait on what aircraft you put the RR1 on…I am sure it will be sleek, fast, maneuverable, and finished spectacularly!
That engine was built by our member Mudhen who generously decided to give it to me on my birthday this March. I never did know if he knew it was my birthday, but I enjoyed giving it a good home and making videos of it flying on the Li'l Satan. I even flew the Traveling Prop on it. Then he took it and tuned it up and perked it up even more than before and gave it back to me recently. So in honor of both the history of the hot little Bee and Mudhen who did all this for me, I want to pair it with an airframe that really works with it.
So, I'll obsess on into the Winter over choosing a model, then when the shop is warm again in the Spring, I'll obsess over building it. So be prepared for me to blather on endlessly while I go through my yearly modeling ritual. In other words, don't hold your breath, but it shall get done.

Oh no not the dreaded hinge debate, again!
I can't think of anything more likely to get us
All 'unhinged'

Or in this case...Tail Warping !!!
Ooooh....Ooooh!!!! NEW IDEA !!! How 'bout hinging the ENTIRE eppenage halfway between the wing and the tail feathers???!!!!!! Several full-scale planes do this simply to provide elevator trim !!!!
No messing with the thin sheetwood of the elevator...just one BIG hinge in the thick balsa of the fuse !!!
It'd be like a flying dolphin !!!! They call him "Flipper" !
Sorry...caffeine over-dose....

See ??!!! Us genius's all think alike !!!
EVEN BETTER !!! The WING is hinged !!! The pushrod goes from the bellcrank to a fixed horn on the fuse. Oh Man...I'm gett'n light-headed ! I better go lay down...this genius stuff ain't easy !!!
Anyway, this concludes my participation in the hijack of Rusty's thread !!!!

Hijack away. I'll kick it back on-topic whenever I have something relevant to the original title. Whenever distractions like holiday guests/activities keep me from my active projects my mind wanders and I come here and start threads like this about future projects. Our house is holiday central, so until January I'll be bouncing off the walls.Kim wrote:Anyway, this concludes my participation in the hijack of Rusty's thread !!!!
