Hello all just found this forum wow I thought I was the only cox 049 obsessed man in the world how wrong I am Or should that be I'm now among friends hmm the latter I think anyway keep on topic I have just read the post about the gnat that hd built for Mitch now I have to be honest and say I'm more into control line than Rc so could I put an 049 bee on the bulkhead and just convert it to c/l has this been done I also have more questions about so much more but will leave that for another post
Cheers guys in advance

i would guess you could use an .049 engine with few modifications to the plans.
1. the engine mounting plate would have to be enlarged because the Gnat was made for a cox .010 engine. and
2. the wing would have to be thickenen/reinforced for control line wires. the original wing was only 1/16inch thick balsa.
i have a full size paper plan and i made templates for each part if you are interested. happydad

Re: Gnat 7.5" bipe control line conversion
Hey thanks hd although that would be great just realised I haven't put a location (or anything else) on my details I live in the uk think it would be a bit far to post but thank you anyway have found the plans do they print out nicely straight out of the printer or do they need messing around with ( not too sharp with stuff like that) interesting about enlarging the bulkhead didn't realise the .10 were that much smaller a have only ever had 049's might use a s/s and 10cc external tank and will definitely have to strengthen / thicken the wing anything else to note about building this thanks for the quick reply

Listen Phill when one spends most English lessons outside the Head of Years office rather than
in class receiving some teeeechin........
On top of that my School was really good, it was 'approved' by the Home Office....
It was named Borst Hall....
My parents used to get letters home "why was your Son in school today"..........?
Sorry guys that probably only scans over here.
I see you're in Vodafonetown, a tough place but someones gotta live there.
My Son's in Abingdon so I know the A34 quite well.
I bet there're loads of great flying fields out your way.

the Gnat plan is one page. i had to adjust the printer a little to enlarge the plan until it was fullsize. i printed about 104% if i remember. with my HP printer it was simple, just adjust the enlarge button a little, then print. here is a photo of the plan turned sideways a little. the plan itself is a .pdf file.
let me know if i can help. happydad

Re: Gnat 7.5" bipe control line conversion
Thankyou hd that's very helpful 104% I'll remember that have saved the plan and the article so will hopefully get it printed out this weekend am thinking wings probably
1/8 sanded to a nice section would be ok the rest I will probably leave as is am thinking flaps as well or do u think it's pointless on this as im guessing high power to weight ratio plus a small area of lift equates to a quick but not necessarily agile model (c/l at least) especially as I run 35' lines should be different and good fun though

Re: Gnat 7.5" bipe control line conversion
If span is 7.5", isn't area going to be a little shy for an .049's power/weight? (Even as a bipe) Quick as you said, but glide like the proverbial brick? Afterall, a c/l has to glide a bit, too.

Re: Gnat 7.5" bipe control line conversion
Hhhmmmm yes maybe so will try to build as light as I can and use 1/8 for the wings to try and introduce a bit of curvature and lift but I think once the powers off I will struggle a bit am thinking nice soft grass might help !!!
